I cant decide what height horse to start looking for, I know height isnt everything, but I do want a big horse

Im 5ft4, slim (7 and a bit stone) but strong. Have VERY long legs.

On Doug at the moment, my legs are getting far to long he is 13.3hh. I ride my instructors ISH who is 17hh and tbh, I dont actually feel over horsed even though he is to big for me

So I was thinking something around 16hh mark? Or will that be to big?

Thanks

Oh yeah, forgot to add about that aswell

On my instructors TB, my legs sort of dangle off her belly, but on friends cob, he takes up my leg a lot more.

I am about the same as you and have a 16.3hh TB who is about right. He is quite a chunky lad as well (takes a MW saddle).

My last horse was a 15hh cobby irish mare though and I fitted her pretty well as well!! I do ride quite short so that might be why but she was ideal.

I am similar in build as you - same height, but about 8 stone and have long legs. TBH I find that it entirely depends on the build of the horse. If they are big bodied I look fine on a 15hh, but if they are narrow/not deep then I look wrong on a taller horse! So I wouldnt necessarily rule out anything from 15hh upwards

I think 15.2hh would be quite right.

Although I am about 5'4 and my horse is 16.2hh, I rode a horse that was about 14.2hh before that was an absolute pleasure to jump, and it didn't look weird because she was quite muscly.

depends on the horse - my mare is 17hh but is very narrow and doesn't feel like a big horse and I always imagined I would feel huge on anything smaller (I'm 5'7) but when I got my boy who is just 16hh but a lot chunkier it wasn't that bad. And he is fantastic to jump LOL

I agree, about 15.2hh would be a nice size. Im 5'6 and Roo is 17hh ish and I look okay on him, I do have fairly long legs... What are you looking for exactly?

I really don't think a horse's size matters, as long as you can ride it well and get a good feeling. I am 5'3, 8.5 stone and stumpy legged and have just bought a very deep 17h ISH - I look small but I can ride her!

And jumps look a lot smaller from a bigger horse...
