If you could have your ideal horse, what would it be? And why?

We are in the lucky position of looking for a new horse to add to the brood, and trying to work out exactly what we want this time around. So looking for inspiration!

We have a reasonable budget, and know what we don't want, if that makes sense! We have a few projects over the years, so it would be nice to have something ready to go this time around. Green is ok, but still have my hands full re-habbing the last napper we bought...

Any links or pictures to drool over would be most welcome ;)

I have my dream horse too :) A stunning black lightweight Warmblood gelding with a perfect white stripe and matching white hind socks. Superb paces and a real show off.
Lovely temperament. If a little sensitive at times!

He's just perfect in my eyes :)

a safe sensible cob type with a little go when asked. would willingly SJ, XC and gallop acroos the moors. has got brakes, and is willing to let meuse them. not strong in any ways and will help me get my confidence up.
doubt that this is out there, but will carry on looking. :D

I don't think I could choose colour, make and model for my dream horse - it's the attitude of the horse that matters to me and it could come in any shape or size I think.

Forward-thinking, honest, lively but not dangerous, cooperative, communicative, enthusiastic, gentle.

Am also "shopping" for a horse at the moment....

Ayla84, I'm so jealous! Would love to find my once-in-a-lifetime horse :)

Charla, he sounds lovely, a lightweight black warmblood is right up my street :D

In no rush to find the right one, really want to find something special (if only in my eyes!)

AshTay, I think you've hit the nail on the head, it's just so hard to find these qualities in one horse without 'quirks' to go with them, as I'm sure you're also finding...

clement82, I used to know a coloured cob exactly as you describe, quite literally worth his weight in gold. They are out there, I think :)

Indeed. My first, sadly now retired, horse ticked all those boxes so really I've had my dream horse but I met him later in his life and I wish I'd had the chance to know him when he was at his peak.

Have only very recently started looking and the two I've tried so far were both lovely (and with honest sellers I felt) but not right for me.

There was a recent thread discussing what sort of horses people set out to buy and what they ended up with which I found really interesting.

She`s my perfect horse but probably not everyones cup of tea, is standoffish, sharp and can be hard work, she`ll freak out at the smallest thing but be fine with big bad monsters
All part of the fun :D

I also have my dream horse but its took me 12 years to find "the one".

This is so unrealistic, but it's my dream horse.

A big 17.2 ish hunter, ideally grey. Suitable for Hunting, Hacking, and the odd jumping here and there. Would have to be a polite gentleman. And ideally, ride and drive :)

Hehe he is definitely a head turner with the personality to match (can be a handful though, no doubt about that). Although not up everyone's street like others say! Took me ages to find him but the wait was worth it !

Lynnskatz, lovely pic. I love your horses face, looks full of kindness :)

Swinghorse, wow! Would love a lusi. Although swore to never have another grey!

Thanks AshTay, I'll look that thread up. I know what you mean about not 'feeling' right, go with your gut every time, I say!

Brontie, maybe not that unrealistic, just like hens teeth ;)

They're out there, just not for sale ;) This is the definition of my lad, and between him and my youngster I have my perfect horses too :)

I've had my dream horse. She was 13.2hh, Welsh, Chestnut, the most beautiful mare there ever was And we did everything together. Yep my dream horse is Lucy.

I miss her so very much :( :( :(
But she gave me the best 12 years of my life and taught me so much. There will never be another Lucy but she's forever in my heart.

Well probably the one i have now - only from a dream point of view she'd be a lot younger (I got her when she was 18) - about 5 or 6 would be ideal and then i could have had so much fun, and managed her properly (poor management/care in her past has meant she is now semi retired)

mine would be forward going but not too big or strong (im very slim) nothing above 16.3 HH if its fine, or smaller if its chunky :) good jump and an outline but not pushbutton. snaffle mouth preferably, good mannered on the ground. i quite like a feisty horse :) but not a bucker!

On my lifetime wanted list in terms of breed are an Irish Draft (and in my dreams it's dappled grey), a Fresian, a Dales pony and a Fell. However, I'm also a firm believer in handsome is as handsome does, so a loving horse with a kind temper goes a long way, Heinz 57 or pedigree!

My GF's pony Buzz is pretty near perfect! Jump's, hacks, easy to school and handle, forward going and thinking, having said that Hovis would be my dream horse! i love big handsome heavies!

I'd love a dark bay with no/minimal white markings WB with a lot of presence, forward going but not silly, athletic, natural ability for dressage, gentle and affectionate on the ground ...

I appear to have a weedy TB who despite all the correct training in the world - still looks more like a weedy TB than anything else :D , very little 'look at me' quality, would quite blatantly prefer to be jumping over dressage and is an opinionated, grumpy git on the ground!

I got the colour right at least! :D Still, I love him.

clement82 they do exist! I promise! I have one :D

I have my dream horse, an absolute gem. I can't tell you how much I love my little horse, and am so lucky to have found him, I'm actually welling up writing this (admittedly, maybe feeling a little odd, I have man flu and have only eaten strepsils and brandy for the last couple of days ;))

Lenny is a 16hh Friesian X, who jumps anything you point him at, does a lovely dressage test, amazing and quiet but bold XC even with me (I'm utterly crap XC and am quite terrified :o) but equally is in a snaffle and I can pull him up from a flat out gallop buy literally the lightest touch on the reins. He's also a real character, and makes me laugh. He watches me walk the course when we compete, his little ears and eyes follow me (despite everyone in the ring looking the same in their show gear) as if he's trying to learn the course for me :D

Keep looking, the horse of a lifetime will come along!

Sidneysmum, send him on down, rather partial to an arab :D I found a tenner in my pocket today, will that cover it :p

I have a horse thats as close to perfection as a horse can be for me. Its taken years to find him and a couple of 'nearly there but not quite' horses which I kept untill they died with whome I had happy but not totally fufilling relationships with. I also went through a couple of duds that were passed on.

My perfect horse is pretty, call me vain but I like fine horses with pretty faces and elegant legs. My perfect horse is sensitive and switched on but straightforward with it. The sort of horse you only need to think *canter* and it canters or just sit up a bit and they slow down.
My perfect horse has to be a brave jumper, one that is sensible and not silly when jumping but who will always jump and not stop. They have to be rideable and want to work and compete and know to try their best at a show.
The most important quality in a horse to me is honesty. I want an honest horse that will do its best to never let me down. I like my horse to have a spark but to also be safe and look after me. My perfect horse knows when to draw the line, they can be forward and have fun but they need to know when to calm down and behave. My perfect horse doesn't want me to fall off. The horse has to be affectionate, have character but also be easy to handle and not have any handling 'issues'.

Heres my boy! He fufills the description above to a tee, he's just perfect for me! The only thing I would change is to make him a little smaller, he's 16.1hh and I would prefer it if he was 15.2hh but hey you can't have everything! ;)

After yet another failed loan/ share to the list (none my fault) I am now holding out for my dream horse. I want a weanling so that however it turns out i basically have myself to blame. Although in the meantime i will hopefully be around a lot of youngsters, and i already have been around quite a few. I know it's a scary step but i think a large part of personality is how it's raised rather than bred and i would love to have a horse who i could bond with really strongly and we could live our whole lives knowing each other. Sad, i know :p

So the essentials for my lifetime horse are: It has to be an arab, a filly, preferably black or chestnut (i find bays boring and greys filthy), nicely bred but doesnt have to be a superstar and on my budget it won't be. And nicely raised so it has good foundations in life. Obviously clean limbed and good conformation.

Will just have to wait a few years before i'm in a position to buy it... :(
