Out of curiosity I just wondered what you would all pay for this horse or expect to get for it if you were selling:

15.2hh, 7 year old, brown gelding

brill SJ bloodlines, AES pink papered (Cor de la Bryere grandsire)

bred & produced by international showjumper

can't remember exact BSJA winnings but out of BN and a little bit left in disco (let's say £150 notional)

placed up to foxhunter

XC schooled & competed up to elem dressage

no vices, hacks alone & in company, loads, clips, farrier, dentist etc all fine.

*THIS IS NOT ADVERTISING* because this is the horse I bought 10 years ago and not the horse he is now (which I would never sell either btw!)

dont know but good luck keeping this thread on for longer than an hour :D

someone will push that button... lol

(not me i frankly dont care if someone asks the value of thei rhorse!) :)

Pass but would love to know who's in your Avatar?

he's broken now. got broke about 6 months after I bought him :( so wouldn't be worth £500 now I don't expect.

hence why I think it's not advertising ;)

yep, unlikely to stay on for longer than 20 mins, what with all the hoo ha going on in this place.

If it wasn't the dead of winter £7000 but as it is the dead of winter probably £5000

Before the credit crunch hit you couldn't get a horse jumping foxhunter for under £10,000  The market has changed so much!

hmmm.... ok, well I bought him at the beginning of August, so let's assume it's then. :)

7k for a 15.2?? are you made of money? unless it could jump massive heights it would not be worth that amount of money!

Yes I think thats reasonable, just because a horse is small doesn't mean its not any good. My old pony could out jump a lot of horses bigger then him and we have the same hopes for our current one. In fact after speaking to a few people on the circuit they would prefer a smaller nimbler horse as a lot of people are over horsed and feel more comfortable on something smaller.

yes and she withdrew she didnt 'want to break her heart' (the mares)

you asked - i answered. good luck with your endeavours xx

I don't have any "endeavours" as you put it. I am just asking a question and engaging in some debate. The horse I described is worthless now, so I just wanted to see how prices have changed in the past few years.

you may be of the opinion that a 15.2 isn't worth having for show jumping purposes but others may not be of that same opinion. e.g. Koko for one and ihatework who posted on my thread in CR, saying she'd pay £6-10k for a similar horse.

I've just seen a horse advertised for 8.5k that's 15.0 with no competition record whatsoever. Obviously they may be well off the mark but that's exactly what I'm trying to gauge - what the range for this sort of horse would be now.

the horse I described clearly had proven scope to compete at 1.20 at least.

ETS - just found something interesting. apparently a 14.2 came 3rd at Kentucky in 07!!!

It all depends, very good friends of mine payed a 6 figure sum for a 15.3 that jumped round the European young riders and came home with team gold!! Not all dinky ones are useless!! We sell alot more of our 15.2h homebreds to Joe public that we do the 16.2's for competition use... For alot more money than mentioned above most of the time... If it was in the right hands he could be worth alot of money, or, like you say worthless... A horse is worth what someone is willing to pay. There is a 16h horse that I want, known on the circuit that I would give very strong money for if he was for sale ( unfortunately he is not, owner been offered well over 30k but not interested ) if people with the right money see your lad as being safe for a child coming off ponies to do children on horses or something i suspect you could name your price to the right client... Not everything is only worth £5knmax... Allthough many on here think just because of the recession everything should be dirt cheap...

Re size - I believe Edwina Alexander's Itot du Chateau is only 15.2, Swedish team horses Ninja La Silla and saint Amour are only 16hh etc - plenty of examples of great little horses. However, at 15.2hh the market would be slightly restricted as not suitable for many men could ride it, and the horse would have to compensate with talent to make up for lack of height/length of stride etc.

How many BD points? My guess would be around 6-7K, but totally depends on scope and how easy a ride it is - jumping Fox with a pro is different to it being happy to jump it with an amateur riding it, and also depends on whether that level is the max level for the horse, or if it has scope to go further.

Thanks for all your comments. Interesting range. (little_flea - no BD points, think the dressage was all unaff and the horse is happy to jump up to 1.20 with a competent amateur, not a tricky ride at all).

Horse was bought for £6k in August 2001. quite interesting to see how the market's changed in that time. not a lot it seems (unless I totally overpaid!!)

Very interesting. I've often wondered what my old horse would be worth in the UK today - bought him (or rather, my parents did as I was v young) in 1994 for 8K - 9 yo Holsteiner gelding, 16.1hh, jumped 1.40m classes, ready for 1.50m if he had stayed with a pro - completely rock solid with amateur teenage girls up to 1.30m, but not a lot of winnings as not very careful. Still, would kill to have that horse today!

I am having to confine my new one to the lunge line only as she jumps out of the school and in and out of the paddocks and over 5 bar gates wearing two heavyweight New Zealands. These are 1.30 now and we are having to increase the school to 1.60 to keep her in as previous owner said she has jumped out of 1.50. She is only 5 and is not quite 16.1 at the moment. Good things come in small packages :)

I dont agree with that. Totally depends on the horse! I know of some 15.2hh's with very decent BSJA winnings, which would be worth way more than £7k even though they dont jump "massive". The height of the fences means nothing IMO, someone telling me their horse jumps say 1.30m BSJA doesn't impress me as it could easily be very clumsy. Prize winnings are what matters as they are the only proof as to how good a horse is IMO.
