Imagine my horror when I tied my horse in the yard to wash his mane and tail, went to get the hose, heard a clatter of hooves on the concrete and by the time I got back to him (all of 10 seconds) he's standing there angelicly as if to say 'what are you looking at'. Connected the hose up and then noticed the blood - cuts to the front of both front fetlocks.

I knew exactly what he'd done, he scooches right down to eat the grass which pokes through the fencing. I guess he slipped on the concrete and knuckled over.

One is a scrape about the size of a 5p, seeping blood it stopped bleeding quickly. Not too worried about this one but the other one is much deeper, about the size of a 2p and bled rather than seeped blood.

Cleaned both up with Hibbyscrub, applied Intrasite Gel, melanin dressing and vetwrap.

Have left him in for the day. He's been out 24/7.

What would you do, turn out or keep in? Cover or uncover?

has the bigger one stopped bleeding??

If it has, i would put wound powder on (though I know there are people here who dont like it!), as it repels the flies....and put him out.

If it still bleeding, i would leave it covered and keep stabled!

dunno what would be 'right' though!!

if clean and stopped bleeding keep covered for a couple of days then take the cover it up apply some products to dry it up and then let it breath and dry out. if it is still bleeding call vets straigh away!

I would agree with what you did to clean and dress it, but for any deep wound on a joint I would always get a vet out; you may need antibiotics.

I removed the dressings last night, as there had been no further bleeding I redressed them, put brushing boots on and turned him out. Judging by the way he was charging about they don't hurt - he is a bit of a wuss!

Removed them again this morning and have left the smaller one open, cleaned it, then sprayed with Betadine Spray. The other one I have redressed with gel, dressing and vetwrap again. I am hoping to leave this open tonight so the flies don't get on it.

By coincidence he is at the vets tomorrow anyway.

Bloody horses!!! He is due to compete at the largest show of its kind in Europe in 11 days time!!!

Hiya P,

Yep he's going but whether he goes in the ring or not is another thing!

She certainly likes to keep you guessing doesn't she!! Are there any signs at all? Apart from looking like she's about to pop!
