My 6YO TBXWBXID is currently unclipped. She is not in work at the moment, due to no saddle (have asked santa for one :p) She has a no fill rainsheet on during the day and a stable fleece on at night. She is warm enough with this and has kept good condition.

Yesterday however, I had a text form ym YO's uncle (he was putting up some lights at yard) to say Ruby and the others were tearing round the field . I went up after work and got her in. She has ripped her rug.... in half:confused: and was covered in dry sweat. Today she is out naked as I don't have another sheet for her.

What would you do?

a)Buy another sheet, and hope she doesn't go tearing round the field and overheat.

b) Clip, she will be brought back into work by end of this month anyway. I have all the rugs she will need to keep her warm and cosy.

c)Leave naked then clip when bought into work. She is a skewbald and a nightmare to groom! plus we are forecast to have heavy rain!

If she's a nightmare to groom and currently out with no sheet on then I presume will come in rather dirty or wet looking being the colour she is.

So for ease and comfort I personally would clip providing you have enough turnout rugs/stable rugs to keep her warm and a few spares for when they get or ripped.

If she's got a tendancy for galloping around like a loon and getting sweaty plus if your bringing her back into a work anyway then it would make sense to clip, you've got a choice of clip depending on how much work or how sweety she'll be getting so it's not like you need to take it all off for example blanket or a trace clip. :)

If it's a one of incident i would get another rain sheet and then clip when back in work. If it's a regular occurance then i would proberly clip now.

How long has she been off work for? Are you sure you want to get on a horse being brought back into work (i.e. potentially fresh!) when it has also just been clipped?!

Thanks for the replys :)

Spottedcat, she has not been riden in about 2 months (due to lameness and now no saddle). Although I have ridden her bareback to and from feild a few times. Despite her age, she is very laid back. She is walked out in hand twice a week for about hour, just to give her a change of scenery really. I jog next to her so she gets a good trot too.

A rain sheet is no good for the winter months really. You need a 1200 denier outer no fill turnout. Horseware do one, the Amigo is very robust. I have one that I use for my grey boy and it is still going strong after 3 years.

Oh and I would wait untill the early spring to bring her back into work as at least that way the weather should be better and you can be more consistant.

I clipped in the end. I was going to leave her naked or find a cheap no fill sheet for her. I went to get her in on Fri and she looked miserable. She was waiting at the gate to be brought in, which she never ever does. So on Saturday I gave her a trace clip, she was very well behaved :D. She seems much more happy in herself now too. She is in a medium non necked turnout and a fleece and medium stable rug at night. She is lovely and warm in this and hasn't come in sweaty. I will replace the rainsheet as it was perfect for when the weather was mild.
