hello alll

so this is my problem.
i pay £250 per month for my horse on kind of semi livery and its great love my yard etc.
Now last month i put paddy out to field for a month holiday which meant he was not getting any food etc. now i still paid her the full £250.
My OH has gone mad as he thinks it should be less as he has been out 24/7 since july.
now we have hit sept i am not sure whether to ask her how much for this months as we paid full price last month. When we paid she was on holiday so could not ask her from the start.
Please don't think im too much of a numpty for this question :rolleyes:

we will be doing this when our boy retires. he wont have a stable, he will just have his field and shelter. so i expect to pay a little less as i wont be using a stable or any facilities etc. good old farmer has agreed and decided on a figure for retirement livery at a good price. result :)

Hmm, difficult. It was your choice to give the horse a holiday. The yard owner still has the same overheads(apart from a small amount of food) and relies on the income maybe. I would think you may have to pay the same and it will be balanced out by the extra hay etc he eats in the winter.

So I can see it both ways. No harm in asking for a reduction but don't be surprised if the answer is no. Your place could have been taken by someone else who needed services and food all the time.

I would say as it was only for a month, leave it. I think you have probably left it a bit late now to try shave money off your livery bill.
Next time, discuss it with your yard BEFORE you turn out. Although you do have a point that £250 per moneth grass livery is very steep, unless you talk it over with the YO well before you do something they could think you are just trying to cut corners with the bill, especially if you talk about it after you have paid for that month.

Sorry this isn't positive, and others might have a totally different opinion and I hope that whatever you do, the outcome is totally positive :)

Does Paddy normally have a stable? If so, then it would have been fair for you to receive some sort of discount as the work involved would have been less.

Was your YO checking on him whilst he was out in the field?

I have to say though, that I think asking for the money back retrospectively isn't the way to go - I personally would have agreed it up front with the YO. People are always far more reluctant to give money back than to give a discount.

I probably wouldn't ask for it back personally (but I am a massive wuss!)

ETS: cross posted with E_Lister, sorry!

I pay 300 per month

During the winter they are in at night turned out during the day and fed hard feed once a day and hay 4 times a day.

During May,June, July,August and September they are out 24/7 and fed hard feed only after they have worked if the grass is not good them YO gives additional hay.

Livery stays the same price all year.

yep i think you have a point i don't want to make an issue of it. sadly its hubby that pays my livery.
i have been checking on my horse every other day. he got a big cut up his leg which no one told me about whilst he was in the field. so not sure if they were checking on him also:confused: if they were they never mentioned anything to me.
It has healed nicely as i have been keeping an eye on it what with the flies around i did not want it to become infected.

Yes i would also not be one to make waves about things i am all for bitting my tongue lol.

I think unless you agreed a price drop prior to the "holiday" then you cannot really ask for a drop now. I am assuming that you still have access to your stable and it is available at any time should you change your mind? If not then that is different - but if your YO could not offer it to anyone else then I think you need to write if off. If you are going to do it for a prolonged period then next time I would ask ahead of time for a reduction to reflect no hard feed or bedding. If you like your yard I think for now I would keep my head down!:p

I just think some YO's are money grabbing leeches, don't they know about PR?
While I agree it's a bit late to complain now (but you'll remember for next time,) I also think YO was in the wrong too especially as you're a long time client. When you told her horse would be out 24/7 for a month, they should have immediately offered to drop your bill, maybe to more than a normal grass livery but even so, by a significent amount, that's only fair and right, you (they) shouldn't charge the same if you're (they're) not spending the same amount on grub, bedding and labour, that's just plain greedy and taking the p***. BTW, it's what I automatically did if any of my liveries did the same, I would expect the same curtesy back from any business.

Being honest, if your horse is being cared for well, I would let this go. Most livery prices stay the same in the summer despite less work/etc involved - its the way of the business. To raise it as an issue may create problems, which if you like your yard, could be annoying.

wow thats quite hard :( I am not the only livery there and maybe she just has not thought about it she has a lot on her plate :o
but thank you for your reply :)

I do agree its a bit rough, however from the livery owners point of view, How would you have felt if she had relet your stable? Did you expect to have the stable back after the horses months holiday? If it was the case that you did then you should expect to pay for it really. I know its hard when o/h pays the bills but looking at it from the livery owners side if it is your decision to put the horse out at grass for a month and she cannot relet the stable then it would still need to be paid for.
however its always worth asking for a bit of a reduction just be greatful if you get one/ :)
