What would you do in this scenario?...BE HONEST

You own a horse farm and have some very expensive mares.

Your normal stallion has died and you introduce a new one and let the stallion run with the mares to breed naturally at certain times of year. It is a very large pasture. All has been well for some time and......................


You are in the field working on fence and are agressivly attacked by the stallion. He seems like he wants to kill you. You are eventaully pinned up a tree afraid for your life.

Stallion seems to have gone nuts and now begins attacking the mares in a horrible manner. Has some down to the ground violently kicking and attacking them.

You escape from the pasture but he continues to attack the mares and appears to have gone Beserk.

There is NO WAY you are going in there to get him out.

what would you do and how would you handle this situation?



I ask because this actually happened to a man nearby me this summer. I already know how he handled it...how would you?
 
Get help!!!! If possible try to let the mares into another pasture and sedate the stallion - with a dart gun from vet if possible?

That's probably not very practical though, and it may be that I'd have to shoot the stallion.........?
 
Our local vet...(only one) will not TOUCH wild stock. Now he quit horses altogether

so what if a vet is not a quick possiblity?
 
I would go into my house, get my shotgun and slug-shots and once I had a clear shot, I would shoot the stallion.
 
Aye, 'twould be interesting to find out why - I would probably of done the same, after I had brought myself to doing it... what else CAN you do?

get a vey experienced hunter to take him out with a rifle - now way would i keep and animal like that.
 
I would have shot it as well.A friend of mine's hubby was attacked by a stallion after he tried to remove him from the fence line where he had smelt an in season mare on a neighbouring property.The stallion didn't belong to them but to another friend who still has the stallion now.The same horse has reputedly been responsible for the death of a man prior to his current owner.He is a very nice NF stallion but as to why they would want to keep him entire when he behaves so aggressively and there is a risk of people entering his field is beyond me.

Thats a shame! Most NF stallions are really good to handle, ive never met a nasty one! Your right though, i wouldnt keep him entire either.
 
The sad thing is the guy who actually owns him can handle him really well and never has any trouble but the stallion just won't tolerate anyone else handling him.I also have a friend who was breeding NF's and she has just had her 5yr old stallion who is county level showing standard gelded.They only found one testicle and she refuses point blank to allow him to go under anaesthetic to find the other one and has said that if he continues to show riggy behaviour she will have him pts.He is absolutely lovely to handle and has just been backed to ride where he is coming along really well.
 
Shot him asap! I have a few stallions and would not tolerate one of them attacking a person, stallions with that temperament should not be breeding anyway. I always believe that a bad tempered animal will breed it on to its progeny.
 
Shoot it.

Did the stallion breed with any of the mares? If so, did any of the offspring show any signs of similar aggressive behaviour?

As all had gone well up that this point then something must happened to set him off? I would want to find out what before I made any rash decision. Of course they could have had him Gelded, as up to this point you don't say he was bad tempered.

Funny how the majority of you say shoot him straight away without knowing why this horse went Beserk in the first place.

Thanks Shilasdair Nice of you to think of me. Oh and while you are doing so please take into account that today would have been my daughter Natasha's birthday, she is the one I lost to cancer at the age of twelve, but then you and some others will probably think this is funny as well.

I am sure we are all very sorry that you lost your daughter, but not being psychic I wasn't aware that (a) that had happened and (b) that today would have been your daughters birthday!

I can guarantee that no-one on this forum would find that "funny" esp Shilasdair - so would you mind not being so offensive in future? Thank you!
 
I might have guessed what LC's response would be. Having separated the mares without being trampled she would probably give a little whistle and the rampant stallion would roll over to have his tummy tickled because nobody else understands him. Then she'd run off with Robert Redford and theyd live happily ever after.

Get real lady, and if I was mourning the loss of a child, I am genuinley sorry if that is your situation, I wouldn't be messing about banging my gums on here!

To answer the first paragraph...it would be nice to know why the stallion changed...but when it is in danger of killing handlers/other horses...you probably don't have the luxury of time to run vet tests.
To answer the second - I am sorry for the loss of your daughter, Natasha, and I hope you have happy memories of her birthday/s. I think most people have lost someone in life, and we can all empathise with grief.

Whf was that all about LC there was no need for it im sorry for your loss but no need to act aggressive to anyone on here! How were we to know about this? Please lets focus on this subject! I would shoot it wondering why it went beresk when it is battering your other horses dont think so shoot it!

So Linda - what would you do IN THAT INSTANT when your mares are being attacked by an animal capable of killing the lot of them?

You had a dog shot because it happened to be worrying your pony......surely even you can see the irony here? I very much doubt the dog could have killed your pony - quite different from a stallion attacking horses.

Why do you think there is a difference between you having a dog shot - but not having a seriously dangerous horse shot?

Your daughter, sad as it may be, has not the slightest thing to do with this thread I'm afraid, and why you felt the need to bring it up in this thread says more about you than it will ever say about Shilasdair....

I am shocked by that comment. Generally, it is accepted that we have differing views on this forum. Not necessarily right and wrong, just different. We try not to descend into personal attacks, and I think I can speak for everyone when I say nobody would find another member's grief in the least bit funny. I am sorry to hear about your daughter, I cannot think of a worse pain than to lose a child, and this time of year makes everything much more poignant.
