About 18months ago a woman nr me got an ex trotter even tho she can't ride ( i asked her if she was planning to have lessons but she said she was just going to 'ride rough'). anyways few days later I saw her riding the horse which was blatantly about 8/10s lame - turned out to be tewndon problem after I persuaded her to get vet, anyways this is now sorted but she still has said horse in nearby field (btw i think he could be rigg).

since about may the horse has been in field near to us and she has never even been near him (we even dug ragwort out of field for him),but in cold weather recently I discovered he had no hay - ground covered in snow/ice and water like ice cube so consequently I'm feeding my hay to him and carrying water for what feels like miles. I got in touch with loaner person who after many days pestering brought some hay and put it in my barn expecting me to feed it- 3 small bales lasted no time !!!!!!

now I am back to feeding my own hay which tbh I can't afford to feed another as I have my own horses too.but the girl who has him is avoiding us , not answering door wehn I knock at her caravan and has been nasty which my mam when she asked her.I can't report her as he looks fine (thanks to us and other neighbours).

said horse is on loan from someone who had him on loan (if that makes sense) the previous loaner says that the owner doesn't want him but doesn't want get rid either. if they decide they don't want him anymore they have to find another home as owner won't take back.

What a c*w she seems to be. Too many people take on horses and don't look after them.

TBH I would keep feeding it, I don't think you can see it go without. I live in Cumbria, could you not ask some one if they know him as Cumbria's horse scene is very tight knit and I bet someone will know who he is loaned off.Then you could see his owner and tell them you will start to charge them for the horse's upkeep.

Keep us informed what happens to him. I hope you can help him.

sorry if i seem harsh but stop feeding and watering call WHW get them involved - whilst you are feeding they cant do anything - sad but a fact - hun stand back and keep an eye but you have to be hard to get the horse safe - braces for back lash :)

I'm trying to locate an owner but all I can find out is hes called terry and used to do trotting races with this poor horse at the gypsy fairs. no-one is willing to tell me about him or owner cos nobody wants to take responsibility for him.

I feel such a mug.
 
Wow, I'm not really sure what to say!

So this horse has an owner that doesn't want it but doesn't want to part with legal ownership, has loaned her out and then being sub loaned to someone who clearly can't be bothered and obviously doesn't want her either.

So 3 parties involved - and yet you are feeding her?

Personally I would withdraw all help, I think you're being taken for a mug!
It really doesn't matter what you say to sub loaner as she's not the owner, all she can do is return the horse to the loaner who in turn has to return it to the owner - regardless of whether she wants the horse back or not!

I just find it shocking that 3 parties involved cant feed this horse between them.
They wont change or sort anything out for this horse whilst you are feeding it, you do know that dont you? No incentive to you see !

Do you know who the owner is, is she aware the horse isn't been taken care of or fed?
What I dont get is if the sub loaner isn't interested, why not just return her? The horse isn't her problem then and she doesn't have to worry about the cost etc of feeding her.

I'm an animal lover, so I can see why you have fed her, but its so wrong x

loads of people have said this and it makes sense to me too but everytime I try and adopt this approach my mum and dad and sister keep feeding him. all the other neighbours have stopped now tho.
 
missyme10- you are sooooooooo right- I'm such a mug. I not sure how many sub loaners there are involved.

she is telling people that we are pestering her and we won't get off her back but we just want horse looked after.I'm sure that there was someone in caravan today as all vehicles were there tv on etc.
 
hun for a long term secure home you have to stop feeding him and watering him - whilst you do the charties wont step in - it will hurt your family and you but i beg you to stop - yes he will get poor but then the charities can act he can come back to health and have a safe life - hun i have worked for happa and many many sad cases but they need to get to point where charities can step in - harsh but true and then a happy life :)
 
I'm going to disagree with the others and say that much as I understand their sentiments there is absolutely no way I could not feed and water this horse in these current conditions. Just couldn't do it. Nor could I afford to do it for long either so appreciate how difficult this must be for you.

Who is the land or yard owner whose land the horse is on? Under the new Animal Welfare Act I believe they have responsibility for the animals on their land. Get on their case as well as all the various loaners and the owner if possible.

If WHW or the RSPCA won't do anything I'd also be tempted to get the police involved and go down the abandonment route as clearly nobody else seems to look after this horse.

When you do feed and water the horse maybe you could keep a video diary, make sure you show there is nothing there for the horse until you provide this for him. And film something like a daily newspaper or something in the same shot to prove the dates, in case people try to dispute them.

This is a horribly sad situation, that poor horse would have nothing if not for you so well done for caring.
 
Before you do anything else, speak to WHW for advice. The BHS welfare team are very good as well. (Forget the RSPCA!).
I can understand people saying that they wouldn't be able to leave the horse without food, but I don't know about anyone else, I simply wouldn't be able to afford to feed someone else's horse. Especially this year with hay currently at £6 per bale. So you need to speak to the right people and get some advice. They'll tell you if videoing the horse without food will be any help.

It isn't rubbish.. WHW and RSPCA told us they couldn't do anything as the animals were being fed and watered :(

OP I just don't know what to suggest, apart from trying to get advice. Like others have said, personally I just couldn't leave it there but wouldn't be able to afford to keep feeding it.
 
Whats the address?? I will go and steal him for you and say I found him :p all jokes aside though what a horrible situation to be in! I think it's unfair to call you a mug because I don't think anyone with a heart horsey or non horsey could just stand back and watch a horse suffer without water or anything to eat :( I don't know what to suggest apart from keep on and on at the RSPCA and WHW saying he has been abandoned.

Do a poster to take to Carlisle Horse Sale tomorrow

Speak to the Mowbrays (both have horses entered) if ''Terry' is local they are bound to know him or know someone who does
Say if some responsibility is not taken for horse-- authorities will be called as you cannot afford to continue feeding horse

I will PM you name of lady in Cumbria Animal Health who may (?) be at sale tomorrow anyway--she has a badge and carries microchip reader.
Do tell her your story
She was very concerned there would be neglected horses this winter when I last spoke to her.
 
sorry to resurrect this thread......but no change in situation except that land owner wants said horse moved off the land asap as the rent ended in november and an arcaelogical dig will take place in mid feb.

also the said landowner thinks he is mine and as the owner/loaner/loanee cannot be contacted expects me to do something about it.
 
Is there anyway you could get old of the passport and find the horse a new home? I know it is not your horse but I could not stand by and see a horse starve. These people are complete scum. The horse is so lucky to have caring peple around to look out for it. I think you are right to keep feeding it but need to make some sort of plan to move the horse on to someone who will care for it. I really do feel for you, but would do the same in your situation.
 
well done for feeding and watering him, i would have done the same. shame on those who advocate just leaving him without until he looks terrible enough for a charity to take him in - yeah, right, so you'd be happy to do that, and see the poor thing every day, going downhill through no fault of his own? :( :(
perhaps the landowner should contact the police and say the horse has been abandoned on his land? i really don't know anything about the legalities so can't be helpful, but it is great to know that there are good people out there like you, who put the animal's welfare first.
 
Ultimately, it's the land owner's problem as he rented the grazing space out to the new loaner. Tell him horse has been abandoned, it's nothing to do with you although you have been feeding him from the goodness of your heart but you can't afford to do so any longer unless he provides the hay for it. Might buck his own ideas up a bit if he realises he's responsible.
