History-mare bought to do pre novice and eventually novice. Rider moving from a big (15hh) pony to horse (approx 16hh). Mare aged 8 when bought, done a fair bit but no affiliated eventing, had done 3"3's clear with a semi-pro rider. MAre is beautiful and instructors love her (particularly sj/dressage people). Already been asked to breed her.
BUT last year she was poor xc, poor at ditches, poor at water and napped badly. Bad back was sorted (Although not sole reason we think). She has done 9 xc last yr, 2 at pre novice. Retired one pre novice as she stopped in the middle of a field-attributed to bad back. one had 2 stops (same venue-easiest pre novice course in the region). The others were intros. She has had 4 clear intro runs, and 3 with problems, generally at ditches.
HEr rider has now said she would like a more established horse and is not confident the mare will ever do pre novice well, i.e without stopping. This is particularly after seeing a ditch with palisadde behind at the first event of the season and saying no way would her mare ever jump that.t
I think we should get her previous rider to take her to a few events and see if she does it with her, and then consider if C and the mare are a good match. Possibly give her a run this yr and see.
The mare has been doing 1.10 sj, very well placed against 2* horses in a dressage competition, so just the xc to sort. She has not had a run yet this season as was sore behind the last rib inexplicably.
Thoughts? She has the scope but appears to be either taking the P or not confident. Sister drops her hands before fences, I think my boy would be too strong for her possibly which is a shame as he is super honest, do you think we would find something better that would take her round the xc?

I think your idea of getting the old rider to take her out is the best idea. But then if the current rider is not confident enough (doesnt sound like she is) then the horse will prob go back to its old ways anyway. If she doenst want to work through this problem, then the horse maybe should go somewhere to be sorted then sold.

I think getting previous rider to take her round some courses might be useful. I wonder also if she associates XC jumping with previous pain. She needs some confidence giving runs with confident rider.
Then I'd perhaps try again with current owner/rider, and see how you get on.
Maybe these problems can be overcome, maybe they need to be overcome with experienced rider, or perhaps XC just does not suit her.

Forgot to mention as well that current rider has only 18months left eventing, and has had a bad run on her previous pony, is it silly to think maybe just get something to do the job?
