So Dexter lost a shoe yesterday

having only been shod Monday, first show he has lost with us. He was hooning around and it has been ripped clean off no hoof lost all nails out etc.

Was hopping lame to bring yesterday along gravel as is a thin skinned TB and was like this when he had no shoe due to an abcess last yr.

Now I was meant to have a lesson last night but had to cancel so may have one tonight. Farrier is out about 4pm tonight to put shoe back on and lesson is about 5.30pm. If horse is sound after shoe is put back on would you have a jump lesson? I will be there when shod so can walk him in hand for a bit and see if sound straight away.

Just being paranoid I think!

Forgot to say obviously has been in all night and will be all day! Will go out tom

As long as the horse is sound I'd have your lesson! My mare went on 3 shoes for a week last summer (including jumping lesson on grass

) as I couldn't get hold of the bl**dy farrier and I had an event coming up - and she was fine!

Well as someone who is planning to take her horse to an EHOA clinic on the Sunday if her horse comes sound on the Wednesday I would say if he is sound tonight then have the lesson.

Although as a quiz team member I don't think you should if you are not going to come tonight

Sus is a TB and in my exerience they are the biggest wimps alive!!!

He lost a shoe at a show last year and was sound walking along the grass (before we realised the shoe had gone) got on to the lane to leave and he nearly fell over got off and reaslised shoe was gone. We ended up walking home with him hopping on 3 legs (we live 5 mins ride from the showground)

Farrieer came up next morning shoe on and sound as a pound!!

If your horse is anything like this i think he will be fine to jump if he is sound when the shoe goes back on.

i would not jump incase the horse has strained tendons from ripping shoe off but you could always get your farrier to make sure its all okay as they are qualified from the shoulder down wards

buy a shoe-boot for emergency use if your horse loses a shoe and then you can still ride without causing problems. sometimes my farrier is elusive and these boots are quite useful

Im pretty sure he would be too footsore in that and I would cause more problems and it would prob rub him or something! He is extremely thin skinned and sensitive, so staying in till the farrier gets there is the best thing for him!

Farrier usually comes out in 24hrs at the most

having a very sensitive footed TB myself, i know what drama queens they can be when it comes to lost shoes.!!
if he looks comfortable once the shoe goes back on and assuming you are jumping on a surface (i guess at this time of year that's a given.!!) then i would be happy to jump him.. maybe go for a shorter lesson instead.?
