I'll try to keep this as short as possible.

Owned horse for just over a year now. Has always had slight quirks to him ie, Rearing whilst being led/handled in field, Bucking whilst ridden when asking for or in canter, nasty napping when he doesn't want to do something, including rearing, spinning and bucking. When i say nasty i mean he will do his upmost to get rider off and to get his own way. These quirks were occasional and most of the time he would lead, be handled in and out of stable and be ridden like a complete angel.

His behaviour has got worse, he reared at me whilst leading him out to his field and hit me on my head with his front hooves and nearly crushed me to the floor. I lost all confidence in him and a friend took him to her yard to work on him and sell him for me.

He has been at friends yard for 1month now and first 2 weeks was an angel, went out to some show jumping competitions, hacking etc and did not put a foot wrong.

3rd week he seems to have realised that when hacking down the lane if he turns right it means going to the school to work and to turn left means going for fun hacking. So now when he is asked to turn right he seriously naps, bucking, rearing, spinning. My friend is confident with him and always manages to get him to go where she wants him to in the end.

4th week, friend buys a new horse, a mare. My horse somehow manages to get into mares field (i haven't been given full details) and attacks mare to the point where mares leg is broken so badly that mare has to be PTS immediately!

Ok so if he was your horse what would you do now?

Friend has spoken about selling him (cheaply) to someone who can deal/cope with problem horses and be totally honest about his behaviour - I'm not so sure this is the right thing to do.

thanks in advance xxx

If she sells him she has to be 100% honest about his behaviour its not fair on the people or the horses or he will end up just being passed around all his life. What your friend suggests sounds like a good idea if someone is willing to take him and try to work with him.

I am not very sympathetic with dangerous horses but tbh, this one sounds like he is trying it on - you said your friend got him through it and 3 weeks is not a long time for a horse to settle. Now my boy is incredibly straightforward but he will also try it on from time to time - just to check I am concentrating and I know if he had a very nervous rider this would not be good news. I am sorry about the mare but I have equally known this happen with very easy horses - accidents happen in the field. I would get him professionally assessed to see if he is worth pursing or really is a nut case who will hurt someone.
