Well after my horse has been a champion for the last couple of months, i got to the stables yesterday after work and as i went to put on his turnout rug i noticed he'd taken a chunk of fur and skin off his hind leg! Its about 4 inches long and about 1cm wide but looked quite sore. I think he must have literally only just done it as i'd got there as it looked very fresh and it was only slightly swollen around the area and he was walking on it ok. So i attempted to bandage it but as its high up on his hind leg it stayed on for about 8 seconds before sliding down so i sprayed it with steroid cream (much to his horror!) and then covered it in - probably too much - anti-bacterial cream. I left him in but checked his stable and couldnt see anything which he could of done it on but left him in.

Went back at 9pm and his first few steps were a bit stiff but was ok walking on it and turning etc. Didnt want to trot him up as didnt think it would help him but i will do tonight. I banaged him up and used that plaster tape to stick it to his fur to stop it moving - seemed to work anyway!

Went there this morning and he was happy enough on it so i re bandaged it, the one had slid down but i think it had only just came down as the wound was still clean so popped another one on and put him out in his field, he trotted off down the end and he looked ok trotting - but it was quite dark!!

What would you of done? Anything different? How long will it take for his skin to cover it again? x I have big event on Saturday, do you think i'd be ok to take him - assuming he's ok tonight?

I have a picture if it helps?

Thanks in advance!!

Not too sure if I would have bandaged it, as wounds heal much quicker if they are left to air. MAybe just some wond powder or purple sray would surfice. But the wound maybe much more than I am hearing in your post, a picture would help.

Agree with benson21. Depending on the wound/cut I use anything from sudocreme, purple spray, wound powder, anti-bac cream and my favourite- derma-gel.

Ill upload a picture in a moment, it was sort of borderline leave it open or bandage it, i didnt want it to get infected and it looked quite bad - for a minor injury - at first glance and i was quite shocked so wanted to wrap my poor boy up!! Didnt expect to find a slice out of his leg!! x

Would of left it off today but he's out in the field as he'll go nuts if hes left in again so ill leave it open tonight.

Would you take him on Saturday? x

Here it is!

At first glance it looks as though he has just skinned it, so clean it, wound powder, purple spray and leave it uncovered is what I would do.

I would turnout so he can move around and keep the swelling down. Plenty of cold hosing, it is likely to be very bruised and sore, will probably swell up a fair amount and I would not expect him to be happy to compete this weekend unless you are very lucky and it goes down very quickly.

Turn out, keep him moving and to keep the swelling down. If its dried up and no swelling by the weekend I would say you would be ok to compete, depending on what you are doing.

thanks everyone, im glad its not worse. Its not deep, just the skin and fur but dont want any infection to get in - or is this unlikely? x

I guess ill have to see how he is tonight but it wasnt very swollen this morning so thats good. I'd have thought that it would of been most swollen this morning if anything. Just wasnt sure if to let him rest it or turn him out to move around on it. Probably being quite dramatic about it but dont want him to be in pain!! x

Ditto be positive. If he's done it in the field I'd also have a look to see what on. It could also be a kick, so I'd keep a very close eye on how sound he was. And use an antibacterial cream/spray, not anything that will cause it to scab over, or seal it too quick. Otherwise you run the risk of sealing in dirt/infection, let it heal slowly.

thanks little legs, he did it in the stable somehow as he was in but not sure how exactly! It is possible that he could of been kicked through the bars but probably very unlikely as of where it is and the angle the next door horse would of had to be at - they also get on really well but wouldnt write it off 100%! x You never know with horses!! x

Benson, its the 1.15 and 1.20 championships and really wanted to do it but wont be able to if its painful. He only really moved when i sprayed it with steroid spray tbf but ill ride him tonight and see what he does!!
