Morning everyone,

I'll try and keep this short!! Basically had a farrier for about 20 odd years now, he is a bit lazy, late etc but is good. Except I asked him to shoe the coblet as he was very foot sore on stony ground and I am riding alot more and roads now etc (4/5 times a week) asked if he would put 4 shoes on, had to argue the point i NEEDED 4 shoes not just fronts, finally persuaded him, then had another 'discussion' about needing road nails in FRONT and BACK, he refused to put in the front and even 'forgot' to put some in the back until i asked and he had to get all his tools back out to put them in, his areguement was the horses rely too much on front road nails and it makes them lazy, i did try to explain every1 has said how much we need them where we live as the hills and terrian is slipperly. anyway he only put back ones in. first ride me and coblet go ice skating down slipperly hill

so this means i no how to aviod or lead him down any hills (which seriously limits my riding) then yesterday took coblet out and started extented trot, he is overeacting terribly!!!!! luckily had over reach boots on but still not nice for coblet!!

called farrier and explained we're sliding every where , and hes overeaching dont want to risk him injuring himself, he insits that coblet will manage fine waiting until 4 weeks (hes only been shod 2 weeks ago) but im not so sure.
so shall i get a new farrier, and get him to come out asap? just need reassurance im doing the right thing as Ive had this farrier for years and years.
cookies, ice cream and hot chocolate for reading

If he won't do as requested, its time to move on

My farrier always puts road nails in all round as some of the roads around us have no grip whatsoever. However these are so small they cannot affect the horses at all unless they were on concrete a lot.

We have a mare who, with hinds on, slips horribly due to her long hind placement. I asked farrier who without demur, put one in each. Happy horse, happy us. Don't get his problem?

While she had bare hooves, she gripped fine but is a powerful mover and was skating on any hard surface. He didn't ask us to prove it though...

He is not doing as you requested which you need from your farrier/any tradesman.

I would suggest ringing him and explain that you are unhappy with the current level of service and having to beg or cajol to get what you need. Tell him you will give him one shot andt hats to come out and put road nails in the fronts (there is no need to re shoe the horse for this) or you will be finding someone else.
