mare comes in sound with swelling round the top area of the foreleg, just under the knee around the tendon area on both sides.warm, not tender
stays in over night after cold hosing
morning-leg is swollen down the whole leg, very diffuse.tendon sheathe down pastern and pastern and fetlock isnt affected.
no cuts only slight mud fever scabs on pastern area.
leg is mildly warm, still not tender, horse still sound.

what would you do?
keep in, call vet, turn out..?

I'd call the vet but only because it's coming up to Christmas and with that amount of swelling I'd expect it wouldn't settle itself. However saying that I have a wussy TB so...
If it was my pony I'd chuck her out and see how she went, really does depend on your horse. If she's sound and happy and doesn't normally have problems I'd turn her out and see.

This close to Christmas, I'd have the vet around now, rather than pay a Christmas or Boxing Day fee. Swollen legs are never a great idea. Some horses are very sensitive to mud fever and even a slight infection can produce alarming swelling and heat.

If it is the mud fever, hosing her leg will make it worse.

I would have called the vet too. They don't necessarily have to be hopping lame to have damaged a tendon (mine was 99.9% sound when she badly tore hers!)
I hope she is ok!

Sounds juts like mine!
He was fine yesterday, this morning his leg had swelled almost identically to yours! Except he has small cut above knee thought to be infected. If no improvement by monday he will need xrays & scans to check bones/ligaments/tendons!
Thats my xmas money down the drain then..

i called and spoke to the vet qwho i know very well and she was happy for me to treat as non infected mud fever
i am really experienced with tendon injuries so i wasnt too worried about this
anyway her legs have got sore areas where mud fever scabs had come off.
shes been in a concrete pen in the barn for the last 2 days and her legs kept dry.
they have gone down loads so she went out today with her wraps on(field frozen over and the one she went in hasnt got any mud in it)
shes sound as a pound and was very happy to be out!
