My eventer is living out ATM, having a holiday. Yesterday morning when i fed him, i noticed a slight swelling on one of his hind legs. A little warm too. I couldn't see or feel a cut so not sure what he's done. I left it, checked it again pm and it was the same.

Now this morning it's ballooned and the other hind leg is starting to swell. I was planning on calling the vet after the weekend if it hasn't gone down, but thinking maybe I should now?

He hasn't gt mud fever and I can't see any cuts so I'm not sure what it . Being out and moving doesn't seem to be working.

Unfortunately I havn't been able to trot him up or cold hose it, it's been dark every time I've been up there and there isn't any running water at the field, I couldn't take him down to the yard to cold hose as you have to cross a very busy road which just isn't safe in the dark (it's on a blind turn too).

So vet, or bring him in and cold/hose and bandadge?

yes vet... had the vet out once and about an hour after he left my horses 9a a foal) legs started to swell, called straight away... joint ill. He was fine because I reacted quickly, this is the kind of things vet can fix. Although a good portion of the time not much chop.

Yes I would get the vet. I've got one coming for a similar thing this morning - but then I found some scabs well hidden by her feathers although she's a lot more hairy than some.

Thanks all, he's coming in an hour :)

Just wanted to double check as I said to my mum I think we should get the vet as it's getting worse, but she seemed to think I was over-reacting.

I thought maybe cellulitis too. Btw sorry about any typos, am on an iPad and it's a bit awkward!

Yes it sounds like something my horse had on his hock about a month ago - it was deeper than cellulitis but not actually in the hock joint. It needed to be treated aggressively with two courses of antibiotics so definitely needed the vet. Hope all goes well and keep us posted.

Yes vet. Similar to one I had last month. Got vet out to look at over-reach as horse lame, she said OK, gave me Danilon but no AB's. Next morning it massive from hock to coronet. I got some them to give me more meds (AB's and Danilon) without another visit but I had to phone them 2 days later with an update.

Mine had something similar to this a couple of weeks ago, just one leg though. Found he had a small crack and some scabs on his fetlock so treated that and decided to give him a week to see how he went. Swelling has gone down and we will continue to treat the crack as we have been.

I think it occurred due to him starting on hay (out in the field) as a similar thing happened to my youngster when I first got him and we did get the vet out then who essentially said to leave it alone (horse didn't want us to touch his legs anyway!).

If you have just changed your horses diet or introduced hay/haylege then this could be the cause.
