If you were moving away and there was no possibility of taking your horse with you what would you do? (finances wont allow it)

To make it clearer.. She is 17yrs old and has navicular.. is intermitantly lame, therefore only light hack.

I might try to find a trusted loan home or proper retirement home where she could be looked after, I don't think selling is an option. I might consider having her PTS depending on the severity of her condition and the first option wasn't working out

BettyBoo,

There is a Website called Project Horses (either www.projecthorses.co.uk or www.project-horses.co.uk) which specialises in the re-homing (Loan or sale) of horses with all sorts of issues - whether physical, ridden or handling. If your horse is not in pain and has quality of life still, you may be able to find somebody via that site who would be prepared to re-home her. Take a look at the site and see what you think.

I did think loanee bth.. i dont think anyone would want her.. as lovelly as she can be..

looks I am going to have to leave North Lincs and move back scotland at very short notice, this means, leaving my home, my job everything and starting all over again, hence when i get up there i will be living with my parents initally untill i can find a job etc.. so taking her isnt an option as i wont have any cash.. This is breaking my heart as I type but unfortunatly she is a hobby and she cant come with me..

Are you absolutely positive that after you move and have got back on your feet, found a job, etc. you won't be able to have her back on DIY livery? If you are 100% certain that you will never be in a position to have her, then you could get in touch with the ILPH (now WHW), local horse rescue centres, the veteran horse society, etc. Silver_Florin might well be able to help you (she runs a rescue in Lincolnshire) and advise you on who to approach. I would not put her out on loan and then move 100s of miles away where you cannot keep an eye on her - there are so many recent horror stories of horses being sold when out on loan.

I'd love to have her back, as when i bought her i promised her old owner i would never sell her, however... circumstances change and I'm at a loss as to what to do anymore.

Its just all so upsetting.

When you go back to Scotland is there any old friends you know who would take her on loan?, contact the local riding club perhaps?

Failing that I think the rescue centres as suggested above would be a good idea and then you could have her back when you are ready, there might be one quite close to you in Scotland.

I am so sorry for your awful predicament

I'm sorry Faro, but this is not a 'project' horse. I doubt selling would be an option. Also, not selling her means you can still keep an eye on her too

I think looking for a trusted loan home or retirement home as someone else esuggested is your best bet.

I know she's not ready to be PTS, as she is very happy and looking great. I think it would kill me if i had to go down this road..

Why does life throw these things at us.. Just dont know how much more i can take!!

Could you not afford to take her with you if you got a part time second job?

I am not in a position at present to offer a place permantly but if the horse is able to be rehomed for hacking i could definately help. I am always asked for hacking horses. I am very particular who we re-home to so no worries for you there.
Please pm me if you would like us to help.

I know nothing of the background to this, but Silver FLorin is offering you some sort of lifeline. Get in touch with her.

I do totally understand. I could not imagine re-homeing my old mare.
If it helps i do arrange loan agreements where previouse owners can keep in touch with loanees where both parties are agreable. If not i give updates myself.
Take time to look at your options and what is right for you the horse.

If you still need to advertise her as a loan, I am sure that Project Horses would be happy for you to put her on there. It's not just for behaviour project horses...

Ditto project horses if SF's kind offer isn't suitable for whatever reason, I think they also take ads for companions, but it sounds like you need a home for her quickly, and maybe PH would take longer.

Could you contact her old owners and see if they want her back (temporarily or permanently?)

Could you perhaps advertise her as a field companion in North Lincs and loan her out that way on a temporary basis until you can afford to move her up to DIY livery in Scotland?

you could advertise her for loan on scottish sites - scotads, adtrader, scottish equestrian, scothorse and try to find her a home as a companion/light hack up here, that way she can move up with you and you'l be able to see her and keep an eye on whats going on. she's the kind of horse that id have taken on loan as a companion when my pony lived out as long as the owner was willing to help towards any vet fees etc that came about due to the health issues so there should be people out there willing to give her a home and a nice laid back life.
