situation is:
Some lovely kind soul has decided to take it upon themselves to cause me a few problems at my yard (its been reported to the police and both the police and I think we know who it is).

So far over the last few months, gates have been opened, horses let out, damage done to my electric fencing, damage to my energisers, batteries broken (handles snapped off) and the last incident this monday was my battery was taken from the field (they left the energiser though) undid the gate (electric tape gate) wrapped it round the gate post and let all my girls out.

Now luckily when my horses have been let out it has been into other fields, but unlucky for my welsh D who is a chronic laminitis sufferer, being let into 6 acres of very lush grass isnt good.

Now again, ive been lucky that it seems that ive caught them within hours of them being out, rounded them up and put them back where they belonged. All proper gates now are chained and padlocked although its seriously annoying that i have to chain all my gates on mky land when the gates are no where near public rights of way so whoever is doing this is trespassing.

so my query is:
would you move 5 horses (ranging from 14.1-17.3) onto a paddock that is roughly 3/4acres in size for the rest of the winter. They will be fed at least 2 bales of haylage at anytime (adlib access in big round feeders) once eaten they will be replaced.
Im not having to buy haylage in as ive had it made off my own land this year.
although i know the girls will trash this paddock it isnt a problem as its all going to be dug up in the early spring for an arena and new drainage to be put in.

so do you think this is ok for them? by doing this would you have peace of mind that they could be messed around with (unless the idiot comes with bolt cutters)
 
Hope they get caught! I would do what evers safest for your horses.

Not ideal but maybe a case of better safe than sorry.

Sounds a bit like the sods who stole our 3 yard cats because THEY didnt like them living at the yard. They reported us to the rspca earlier in the year who were more than happy about where/how the cats lived but thats not good enough for them. One day someones going to slip up and and then they will find im not as quiet and polite as they thought..................

Some people need a life!!
 
cheers thats what im thinking - all i can say is thank god my big WB decided to be a good girl for my 5ft mum, she walked up to the gate when shed caught the others and tootled in rather than galloping round like an idiot.
 
god thats awful, i really do hope the person slips up some day soon for your sake and you find out where they went, hopefully to a loving home.

the person i believe is doing all this at my yard is also the sam person who i believe locks my yard cat up for weeks at a time - last lengthy time was 6wks - he came back thin (not emaciated) but certainly was glad to be home.

what is it with some people? do they just love causing problems for people? do they get a kick out of it?
 
they will be getting exercised a t weekends and when im around at the yard (say at weekends) they can go play in the big 6 acres field (when i can keep an eye on things) also at least where they are going to be (subject to the electric board getting their arses into gear) theyll be in a CCTV covered area.

best thing about these people (i know i keep saying it, but the ones i believe it to be) they are supposedly animal lovers and carers - yeah right
 
thank you for the offer - all add you to the huge long list of people that is raring to give them a kicking! they are well known unfortunately, which i didnt know before buying the land

I would say what you are sugesting sounds like a very sensible option and 3 or 4 acres should cope reasonably well even with that number of horses on it...

I was just going to sugest you get some CCTV up so that you can catch the buggers up to no good so then at least you can prosecute...
 
CBFan, no not 3 to 4 acres, 3/4 (three quaters) of an acre.

yeah my friend (security guard) and his dad are coming up to have a look at what well need re the CCTV, plus weve got loads of help, advice and info from the police about it. id love to prosecute these people though i feel it would not make the slightest bit of difference

Daisy....I'm so sorry to hear of the cr*p you've been going through....I hope it gets better soon. It sounds like you need to move the neds for the time being. Hugs to you & good luck for things changing (for the better) in the future xxxx
 
Its one of two people, one has a friend who used to ride hubbys horse, and they wanted to buy her, but they are both complete novices and cant handle a stroppy inexperienced 16hh shire x dutch. We stopped the friend riding her as it was getting dangerous, she was literally walking all over her! The friend works as a voulenteer for cats protection and thinks she knows it all.

The other person it could be is the mother of the girl who used to ride our pony. We stopped her riding as they kept letting the already fat pony out on the lush grass, we left them books on laminitis, told them to keep him in his paddock with a constant supply of hay as the grass was too rich, oh no, time after time they let him out to graze in 7 acres of nice grass!! They also kept leaving our other horses in the stables with no water/bedding/hay for several hours at a time! She used tokeep carrots in water to keep them "fresh" but it was the same water for a week or more and the carrots were slimey! YUK.
 
what i would do for a very simple life where i can go and enjoy my horses without having to wonder what the next trick is thats been pulled.

i just keep hopin the little tw*t gets bored and find something more productive to do , like get a job and earn a living

and what with the CCTV we hopefully can catch them in the act so to speak.
who would ever think that owning your own land would be so bad?
 
Keep them close at hand and feed haylage at lest they should be safe. but you and the police should keep an eye open bigtime and padlocking everything even with heavy chains is well worth it than losing an animal on the road
 
well we have a few neighbours that are very close - as in opposite my main gate and they face up my land, but they work f/t and i dont know if they would actually stand up against these people (most people seem not to for whatever reason it is, i think they are scared of them)

im very lucky that my local police force are being very good with it all. Since it all started, theyve upped the patrols past my land and have said that they will park up regularly and have a wander round my field which i said they could help poo pick whilst they were at it

Really difficult situation - you must be really stressed wondering what is going to happen next. I would be having nightmares if it were me - really feel for you.

3 quarters of an acre does sound really small for 5 horses though even if they have plenty of haylage wont they be standing in pure mud 24 / 7? Sorry not much help I know but do you have any alternatives?

hopefully next year winter it will be different as ill have plenty of hardstanding & concreted area to help them not be standing in mud (plus im hoping to have the problems im having all sorted out) i know that doesnt help me now though. yes we will have mud - luckily it doesnt get knee deep.
there is one thing that i have up my sleeve and it may come off sooner than planned which would mean they wouldnt have to stay on such a small paddock (cant go into at the mo, should be sorted though in the next few weeks if i pray enough)

they lived out on roughly 6 acres last winter till approx Feb then they moved onto this paddock and yes there was a fair bit of mud and i only had 4 last winter.
dont really have much more options really as this is the most secure area of my yard, where i can be sure that they are safe and secure.
 
That's awful and in a sense I know what it's like. Our horses were chased by idiots with sticks, and were shot with air rifles (hit mine just beneath the eye,could have been SO much worse, another horse the pellet stuck in the shoulder)

We moved them eventually, the police did f all.

I would move yours, yes it will be muddy, but it's better that than your situation now. Good luck x

Okay sounds a bit daft but do you rent / lease your land ? are they after it?my hubby used to be a private detective and he is quite cynical about these things.
similar thing happened to me ,I lease 20 acres, offered to go halves with someone-- I only had 2 horses at the time so did she .so we could share costs etc .she backed out.2 years later their yard closed and about 6 months before that I had similar things happening , horses out, electric fence either cut or pulled out.fence units broken, water tuned on and left running,batteries pinched, tackroom broken into, --but nothing stolen.
I had my suspicions, and let on to a few people that I was tied into a 10 year lease and until that ran out I was there to stay.hubby said a few thing but never found out what .wouldn't tel me said it was better I didn't know !!.and then
suddenly they found some land and everything stopped !!.
I thinkl I would move the horses, If you can afford to lose the land as its going to be hoofed over anyway,for their safetyand for your sanity too
 
got lots of heavy duty chains and padlocks on all the gates that can be chained but unfortunately i cant put it on electic tape gates

but were going to be investing in some more "proper" gates soon so they can then be locked up

sleeping down there is a possibilty however i do only live 0.6 miles away from there. So will be much easier when i have CCTV as we will get it wireless at home so we can check on whats going on.
 
fusaberry - totally agree with your husband about being cynical. We bought the land 2 years ago, but only moved the horses on just over a year ago - lots of building/fencing to be done before they could get on. However i know its down to jealousy that this is all happening. apart from this land we dont own anymore and obviously finding another place or livery for 5 will be hard and cost a fortune - plus it seems to defeat the whole purpose of us wanting to own our own place (the few things have been taken dont come to anywhere near the amount of livery would be - i know that sounds wierd).
Think the girls are going to have to put up with a bit of mud for the moment
