The young welshie that i look after Merlin is not technically mine although i treat his as my own and have done everything on my own with him so far: getting him used to rugs, roller, had saddle perched on him, boots on feet handled etc etc and he comes to me when i call him.

His actual owner is talking about selling him to someone and i have said i want first refusal should they sell him, having spent all this time 'training' him.

However i'm worried that they will sell him to someone else anyway so am not sure what to do.

Whether to buy him now and spend a lot of the money i have saved up the past 6months on him so he won't be sold and will belong to me or not?

I think if i don't do that i risk losing him completely ?

It not a nice feeling when this happens.. but sadly this does happen sometimes.. its happened to me!

I think in reality what you need to do is think though the situation unemotionally...

If you were/are looking to buy a horse of you own... does Merlin fit your ideal? If not take the experience you have gained and move on... potentially finding yourself something better suited in the long run.

If the answer is yes merlin is all you have ever dreamed of and he is the perfect horse for you... if your in a position to do so then consider buying him... perhaps negotiating a bit of a discount for the work you have put in.

Whatever you decide make sure its right for you... and not just a reaction to not wanting him to go. x

If you don't want to run the risk of losing him ask to buy him and mention that when considering the price could it be taken into account what you have done with him to get him where he is. If you trawl the market place you should get some idea of what the going rate is for a like for like when you got him.

Have you any reason why you think you wouldn't get first refusal? - after all it would be far easier to sell him to you than to have to advertise etc.
At the end of the day only you can decide whether you want to and can afford to buy him. Sadly that's the problem with putting so much work into a horse that doesn't belong to you.
 
If its going to break your heart seeing him go and you see him not just as a project and is something you wish to keep to ride for the future then for gods sake buy him.

If however he was just something to mess around with between riding your own horse, you have bonded with him and he's responded well to you training him then yes its easy to get emotionally attached to them and not want to see them being sold or to see someone else benefit from your hard work but he was never yours to begin with, you have let yourself fall into this situation....I know, I've done it many times myself.

But which ever you choose, you have to think that you have both had benefit from the situation, you'll of learnt a lot from him and vice versa and hopefully because of your hard work he will find a nice home to carry on with his education and you can proud of what you have done with him.

Surely they will give you first refusal on him anyway? but like someone else said, put your emotions to one side and sleep on it for a while, would he be the sort you'd go and buy if you were wanting something else, if yes go for it.

Not an easy decision, just try to get over the shock of it first then you never know you might feel differently in a weeks time.

Well thing is someone else is interested in him, and i feel that if i don't do something straight away he will end up going to them instead.

I used to work on a dealer yard so i know the feeling of horses i've worked with coming and being sold again. Where i am now i have had 3 that i've spent months/years riding be sold and i've not been hugely upset by those ones.

But Merlin seems to be different, i've known him since the day he was born and was really looking forward to finally sitting on him next yr, even my Mother agrees that i should buy him which is unusual for her!
