Ok, bit of background, have a 8 yr old Standardbred who i have owned for approx 3
years, the first year was spent getting to know each other with lots of hacking, she then fractured her pedal bone and spent 9 months on complete box rest. During the box rest she developed upward fixation of the patella and when the vet advised that the fracture was healed enough to bring back into work i sent her to a rehabilitation centre for swimming, spa, horse walker etc for 3 months.

She came back in May of last year and i brought her back into work very slowly with hacking and some very light schooling.

Now in the time before she had her accident she could not canter in the school or on the lunge, but will canter/gallop out on a ride in a straight line with a lead horse.

Started lessons just after christmas, i have an hours lesson every two weeks and things are going ok at walk & trot in the school, not attempted canter as 1. she is not balanced enough and the school is too small & 2. i am not balanced enough.

In order to achieve balance in the school i have tried to get her to canter by loose lunging & lunging but she really scrabbles into it and gets so excited that she is tying up slightly, i have had the vet out to her but he says it is just mild, but she has done it 3 times in the last few months, the last time being last week. She is quite weak behind but is fully fit.

She is not on a large feed and is ridden nearly every single day, she is feed Happy Hoof, High Fibre Cubes, Benevit & Soya Oil.

Shall i get the vet out & have a full lameness workup (she doesn't look lame but does skip slightly going into trot)??, just completely stop trying to get her to canter in the school and do more canter work on hacks?? The problem being she is really very fast and i feel quite nervous hence the need to work in an enclosed area.

Has anyone had any experience of any of this, any help/advice much appreciated.

Not had any experience of this but could you hack/box to anywhere nearby with a larger school? Or even a small field you could ride in (that's bigger than the school you use but still fairly enclosed?) Unbalanced horse and unbalanced rider don't really go together so I'd maybe try and get some lessons, ride a friend's horse or get a friend/instructor to school your horse. Maybe try and build her back end up a bit more too by lunging/schooling in walk and trot, making sure she is working properly. This may be hard at first if she has no muscle behind but take it slow and build up gradually?
