I'm currently working in a vet practice doing maternity cover for a year march 2010- march 2011! My contracted hours are 8.30-3.30 absolute bliss as I have a horse on diy and thought this would work perfectly :). Since I started we have been extremely short staffed and I've generally been working various shifts 8.30-6.30, last minute shift changes, staying on at the last minute, coming back if they needed me etc, etc! I was keen to please was told that this job would 99% certain become permenant! The person who I'm covering has said she's sure she's not coming back! They have asked for it in writing but she has not produced yet! Thy have now totally changed the rota meaning I'm doing lates all the time and not the shifts I'm contracted to do due to short staffing again! It seems they are not committing to me becoming permanent! My question is would you do the new shift pattern or kick off and say that I wil do my contracted hours from now on as I'm obviously not being made permanent?
Wine and large bar if chocolate for those who read this far :).

I would probably wait until the person on maternity leave hands in her notice, wait for them to offer you the permanent job and then negotiate the terms - and kick off if they don't give you the hours you want :D
But if they give you late shifts all the time do you want to become permanent?
