The yellow pony has had a rather tough time in the field this week :(. He came in yesterday with his rug ripped in two :( and bite marks on his back and swollen legs.

Now the person who's horse did it didnt even have the courtesy to text me when she got hers in to say he had a half a rug hanging round his back legs and still hasnt apologised for it. Now when another horse made a tiny hole in her horses rug they paid for it and her horse has done far worse to mine and she hasnt even appologised. Aside from the fact I really cant afford to be replacing rugs she added a horse to the feild that had a warning from its owner that it had seriously hurt another horse when she brought it and he has completly changed the way they all get on. She has looked at the rug as it has been moved but still no appology. So how do I go about getting her to replace it?

Yellow pony has been seperated but he cant stay there long as he is on the grazing thats growing for summer, other yards in the area are very tricky in diffrent ways and not only are they hard to get in to but they have a dodgey reputation. Mum has said he can go home but she isnt horsey and I dont like to burden her with looking after him as he is my horse and it means I would have to commute to and from uni regularly.

I'm gutted his back is still hurting him and he hates having his rug changed now because it obviously hurts him still and his back legs are still swollen. So not only am I worried about him I now have no suitable rug for him to wear and not even an appology let alone any offer of some financial contribution towards a new rug. I know hes a bit of a push over in the field but he always stays out of trouble.

Sorry long and ranty probably not helped by my lack of sleep and missing home.

We have a horse at my yard like that but luckily he's out with a horse that gives it back :). It's a pain when it happens though!

Have you tried talking to her and asking her to replace the rug? Or at least asking her if she has one that she can give you if it is the right size etc?
 
Aww. Poor Rob. You probably, annoyingly, aren't going to get your rug replaced but it's a shame she couldn't bring herself to apologise. I know horses are horses and all that but a sorry can just make everything so much better. What does YM say about trying to make a slightly more harmonious herd? Is the horse usually a trouble maker or is this a one off and is there a chance they'll settle back down?

If you send him back to your mum I'm happy to help her out if she ever needs a hand. I'm not that far away.
 
I would find a yard with individual and pair turnout with staff who are careful who goes where. Safe turnout is so important. I'm really sorry your horse is hurt and I would certainly find a new situation.
 
How long have the horses been turned out together? Have there been problems before? Are there other horses out in the field apart from these two? Has anything changed recently that has made their behaviour change?

Rug damage is one of those things I'd just accept, unless there was real evidence that one particular horse was a serial rug shredder - I'm not sure I'd ask for money after one occasion of damage. Are the injuries a one off or has this been building up for a while?

If the horses have been out together for a while, it seems unusual that one has suddenly set against the other to the extent that he needs to be separated.
 
This is down to the yard owner as much as if not more than the owner of the horse. While an apology would be nice it is also admitting guilt and unless the yard deals with it and makes suitable turnout available the owner may find she is buying many new rugs.
Yards that take in liveries need to be able to separate the thugs or refuse to take them if they cannot give everyone safe turnout, I know it is not always possible to know which horses will be settled together but with horses behaving like this there needs to be an alternative place for them.
 
Poor Rob :( If I wasn't already overstocked, you could put him in with mine :( I could lend you a rug though? I'll be up the yard most of tomorrow if you want to borrow one? All J's are 6'3 though I can't guarentee they're in pristine condition :p

I'm afraid you'll have to forget about your rug.

You need to talk to YO about safe grazing for all the horses with appropriate companions. If you don't get a sensible response you will need to look for alternative accommodation.
 
Unfortunatly the YO isnt horsey and theres not a YM so they just think it should be mares together and gelding together and thats all they offer, which untill she added a second horse of hers was fine, the one that she was warned did some serious damage to another horse in a field, there were a few bite marks before but nothing major.

Moving isnt as easy as it seems the yards round here are all full for one because we are on the waiting and I think JFTD will support me saying that theres some very strange charachters round here running yards.

Thanks for the offer of a rug JFTD he has his fleece under a sheet for now even though its not ideal :(. It seems you have to pay over the odds for a rug with about 100g fill these days :(.

Oh I'd definitely back you up on that - as would a couple of other local forumers! :cool:

I've got some 6'3s spare, I went on a bit of a spree when I got my boy and he's hardly worn any of them :eek: not sure if I've got any medium/light turnouts though but I'll have a look for you tomorrow.
