So, it's come to the time when I should really start thinking about buying a new vehicle.
I've been driving around in a little V-reg Renault Clio since I started learning to drive. It's been a good little car to me, but I fear it's reaching the end. It's starting to have random little things going wrong with it. The service light never turns off anymore, the water keeps running out of the radiator after just a month etc etc

My question is this, do I go for another hatchback, a car I'm used to, is more economic and one I enjoy driving, or do I go with my dad's advice I go for a smallish 4x4 that would suit my lifestyle a bit more, cause it would allow me the opportunity to tow should I need to go anywhere on my own (if we ever get a useable horsebox) and it would mean I can carry feed, hay, haylage etcetc without making 0-60 an impossible task

I will say I do travel over 40 miles every day back and forth to work, most of that on the M11. Also considering that if I got a 4x4 it wouldn't be a very new or expensive one, because I can't afford newer and more expensive!

Hot chocolate and cookies for anyone who can help with this dilemma :D

I have just done the opposite. For rid of my 4x4 and bought a little car. I do a fair amount of miles too and the running costs of a 4x4 are so much higher. Plus the tax and insurance too. Costs me £42 to fill up now as oppose to over £80 and it lasts longer. Also my tax was £60 ish for 6 months as opposed to £164.00!

TBH a little 4x4 isn't much good for towing, is much more expensive to buy than a Clio and costs a fortune to run in comparison to the Renault. I'd stick to a Clio in your position and spend the extra money on a newer model which won't need as many replacement parts.

if you do stick to a smaller car what are you options for getting horse around? I'm also currently in this dilemma - do I get rid of small very economical car which I do actually love for something I can tow or what are my other options? I have a horse which I would very much like to get around the place

Yeah, I think I might just stick with a hatchback. I was actually hoping to go for a little VW Polo or Golf rather than sticking with the Clio. Or perhaps even their new Up!, which is apparently a really nice little car.
I do loves me some VWs if I'm honest XD

Miss Bean, my option for getting my boy around is to either force mother to come with me everywhere, or get used to driving the hefty Jeep (I have no love for driving that thing at all  lovely truck, but it doesn't agree with me!)

My other option is for me and mother to save up together and fork out on a nice horsetruck. Which is what I'd prefer personally.

I only the 4x4 from when I used to borrow a friends trailer. Got a 7.5 tonne lorry now. So was silly running that and a 4x4. Lorry is actually cheaper to tax than the 4x4 was!!!
