regarding Harry...

I have two choices. Sell him (not yet, im talking about in the future) or keep him to hunt again this season.

However, if i kept him to hunt- which i dont really need to do as Tara was sold to us as a hunter so i can take her out- he would get super fit again, and then consequently go abit barmy, and then i would have to go through what i have had to do this year- give him a few months off and bring him back into work.

If i sold him, i obviously wouldnt be able to sell him yet as he isnt physically or mentally ready, i have been recommended by several people to take it slowly with him so obviously i am now and have only been walking and trotting (with a few accidental canters lol!), so it would take quite a while untill he is ready to sell, and although he doesnt buck anymore he is still a handfull and it would be hard to find the right people for him.

Another option is to take him to a horse sale. I dont care about how much he sells for as to be honest we paid peanuts for him, and although he now showjumps (Well, so far so good anyway!) i dont think he would sell for much because he is such a handfull- although he could go really far with a good young rider, but he is nearly 10 years so its abit late..

any opinions? and how much would you advertise him for? i wont be offended if you say 10p to be honest as we dont want to make money on him anymore...

hes 14.2hh chestnut welsh sec. D, rising 10 yrs. He has hunted and teamchased alot, being the only member in the team chase team not to have had a refusal in any of his outings- he loves it. Also loves xcountry on his own, would be great at hunter trials. He has won in excess of £300 bsja in the past, but he was given a break from showjumping and now he is doing it again he is being really good and loves it, turns on a sixpence and sees his own strides. Would do low key eventing too, has a lovely trot, but still need to work on his canter. Could do showing as he has really expressive strides. He hacks out in company, can be quirky out on his own though. Gets abit het up in an open field if you dont let him go. He isnt suitable for a novice. Needs a CONFIDENT rider as he picks up on nerves. He has such a scopey jump and he gives a really good feel over a fence. Hes 100% to do everything with; load, catch, shoe, clip, wash...whatever, hes fine!

So yeah, thats him. if i decided to sell him, how much should i put him on the market for? was thinking about £2k, what do you think? thanks!

Not sure what the whole story is - but he sounds like a cracking pony for an equally deliquent, fearless teenager.........

Would be such a shame to put a smasher like that through the sales to only sell for peanuts.

Wow, he sounds blooming wonderful! If you do advertise him, be honest and state clearly like you have here, just what he's done, and what his vices are. A good rider would have a blast on him by the sounds of it! I saw a similar sounding welsh mare advertised for £5k recently - thought that was very ott tbh, but I reckon you could ask £2.5 - £3k and then negotiate tack and rugs etc...

If you sold now, someone could work him through the summer and be hunting / xc'ing / eventing by the winter!

Definitely DO NOT take him to the sales. Can’t believe you would even think of that!

I think you’re putting him down too much – there are plenty off good little riders out there and he is a fab pony, also quite big so not like it’s going to be really little people coming to see him.

How do you know he will be really difficult to sell if you haven’t even tried??

I think I would keep him over the winter, nothing wrong with having a spare hunter! If decide you want to sell him I’d ask about 4 – 5k, but I don’t know that much about pony prices… if he’s good at stuff then I don’t see that him being a little git should make him worthless.

Good luck!

I did try to sell him last year lol! it really didnt go well..! we had someone come to see him (a woman who wanted him for endurence

) and he took the pee and started broncing with her in our field. Loads of people enquired wanting him for 11-12 year olds who wanted a confidence giver, even though on the ad we put not a novice ride

We had one person who on the phone said how good she was (well, her mum said how good she was), she was 13 and jumping BSJA, apparently an amazing rider- she sat on him and walked him- he went straight into a jog and she got off and said she didnt want to do any more on him- she looked petrified!

sales are only a last resort really, just an option there in the background incase we never sell him.

To be honest I think he'd be easier to sell than you think. I'm sure there are a lot of young riders out there who'd love a pony like him to have fun on and who'd have the ability and confidence to do well with him. I know my sister for one would bite your hand off for him! Ultimately you know him best though and I'd go with your instinct as to whether he's ready to move on - and as to who he goes to when you do sell him. I wouldn't want to put him through the sales as I'd want to be sure that whoever he went to was fully aware of all his 'quirks'. Good luck with whatever you do! I've enjoyed your posts about him - he looks a great pony despite his issues!

Yeah he is a wicked little pony, although i didnt really like him at the beginning of the year when he sprained my ankle, i now really love him and would love to keep him forever but we dont have the time/money/space!
he has taught me alot and i dont regret taking him on at all, he has been so much fun, the sort of pony who you could do anything with in the stable/field, he follows you round and when you run he trots, and he will follow you over cross poles and stuff!

when do you think would be a good time to sell him? i know the market is better at certain times, so when would i get the most interest? and where should i advertise him? i want to get him more muscuarly developed before i sell him though as he isnt quite ready yet

He sounds like a great pony!!

I also ride a 14.2 delinquent asbo pony

Once you get over the testing phase they are great. You just need to find the right person.

I am sure that you will be able to sell him and please avoid the sales. I'm sure you would regret it as you obviously care alot for him

Try to weed out unsuitable people before they come to visit and you could always look at the older teenager/small adult market.

I think the key to good selling is to get as much information about the enquirer as possible - then you can both make an informed choice about whether they should view the horse/pony for sale.

So, for instances, if someone says they are looking for an endurance horse - clearly he is not for him and so on. Be brutally honest about what you are selling - not to put pontential buyers off, but to save everyone a wasted afternoon.......

He sounds a super little pony...just something I could have done with last year in fact....used to ride a 14.2 who would do alsorts with people who in the end didnt want to ride her as she jogged and had so much energy and I loved it....would canter for miles :0)
I am sure you would have no problems with buyers if you have the patience...
I just sold my pony about a month ago - 13.2hh 15yr old who was brill. Needed a confident rider and sounds just like how Harry behaves....got some real wallys calling up...one daughter had only been riding for 4 months and they wanted to buy her...!! In the end I just hanged in there and someone came up who was perfect...
he sounds brill and I think he would be wasted at the sales...

I do think you are running him down a bit, he sounds absolutely cracking, and there are plenty of confident talented smaller people who'd love to have a fiesty talented boy like him to compete.

He has a brilliant jump, and even if he is a bit hot sometimes, he doesn't really sound completely insane or nasty.

I would sell for around £3000-3500. He's got a lot of different markets to be aimed at - PC team horse, hunter, BSJA showjumper for a young rider etc. Don't think you will have any trouble selling him, just be honest.

On the ad I would put everything he has achieved and is capable of doing, put down all his good points, but add that although not nasty, he can be hot so not suitable for a novice.

thank you for all the advice- maybe i am putting the poor mule down abit

Have arranged for my mate who is a good rider but younger than me and still on ponies to come and have a ride on him, see how that goes, and once we get him muscled up abit more we will proberbly put him up for sale- thanks for all the advice
