I'm looking for a nice allrounder at the moment and wondering which areas i would have to compromise with as to get something within my budget.

I really just want to do a bit of everything and would be happy with something that has been there, done that.

Well you can pick up throughbreds for a pittence at the moment! if another breed though something that needs bringing on, I havent been looking at horses for sale though! not much help

for 2k i got raff.

he's well bred, hanoverian x polish warmblood. 15.1hh. 6yrs old. bombproof. hacks alone and in company. jumps 1.40m (apparently). perfect to handle, no vices etc. but can be ploddy in the school. i've never had him properly fit, and only ever pootled up the road etc on him... but, i think, when fit and shiny he'll be a FAB horse.

you can get bargains...

good luck!

I have just bought a 4 year old ID x Cob 16.1hh Appaloosa unbroken for £1540. Just got to transport home. I think I will have a bargain, a big strong weight carrier, unspoilt by anyone and unblemished and interesting to look at too.
If you have a small budget, its best to buy a good youngster and DIY it, than to buy a cheap broken horse as they all seem to have loads of problems or are just boring to look at and generally mediocre.
It all depends what you want a horse for, whether its just a horse to ride or something a bit special.

I got my first horse four years ago for £1,500 - but he was advertised for about £3k. Owner just wanted a good home for him and as I had shared him in the past, she was happy to take less. He was 10, came with some rugs, and did a bit of everything, though he was never really that happy jumping anything terribly big. But he was a cracking hack, had lovely manners and could definitely have done more dressage had I been able to push him (and me) more, and if I had my own transport.

It's a buyers market right now and everyone is having to revise their prices down. If you can show the seller you will be a great owner, with access to a great yard and facilities, they will often help you out on the price. Also any connections, or people being able to give you a bit of a "reference! will help too.

I think a seller who won't budge on price for what is clearly a wonderful home is possibly to be avoided. That said, if you try and offer £2k for a £10k horse, expect to be knocked back!

i got my mare in july 08 for 2300 inc bits and bobs inc a single breast bar for a trailer rather randomly lol!
she's a 10yr old irish mare. buckle of the rein hunter, lots of scope, nicely put together - but did have a sore back from badly fitting saddle...

Last Sept I bought Elsa a 16.1hh 5 year old WB mare for £1500 inc full wardrobe. She had been backed by her then owner who is a professional dressage rider. She was green but ready to bring on. She had only hacked a handful of times and had seen a pole or 2.
She is proving to be a real sweetheart and a bit of a bargain.
Again she was advertised for more but her owner was selling her due to ill health and the home was more important than the price.

I got mine for a smidge under £2k. She's a 14yo 14.3hh HW cob mare. She's absolutely bombproof, a perfect confidence giver. She doesn't really jump, isn't very well schooled, although she'll give anything a go, but to me she's just the best!

I got a "typical" but very green 16hh middle aged TB, never raced, low mileage, no vices/beautiful nature, but needs bringing on a bit for £1900, incl saddle and bridle.

I got my 16 yo registered Haflinger "confidence giver" ride and drive for just under £2k 3 years ago.....and prices have dropped since then.

My boy will never excel at any one discipline but my god, he is a jack of all trades :) 100% in traffic, lovely to drive, forward going but stoppable, loves a jump, will do dressage or showing under sufferance but he does have a buck in him and can be *ahem* cheeky on the ground.

I was looking with a similar budget to the OP but didn't want a youngster as my confidence was shot so I went for the "older, been there, done that" type.....
