What would you expect to buy with £2k?

I think the buyer needs to think about how important the jumping side of things is to her. Does she just want to hop over the local 2' clear round occasionally, or does she want to go clear and have a chance of being in the placings over 2'9"-3' courses comprising fillers, spreads, walls etc? Much easier to find the former type of horse cheaply than the latter, all other factors being equal.

The most I have spent on a horse was £1800 and I have had a couple of super ones! BUT they have been very buzzy/sharp/spooky/strong/green and therefore not everybodies cup of tea.

It is possible to find something nice and cheap, but there will probably be a compromise somewhere.

Thanks again all and for the links. Much appreciated!

Like I said, I don't think her expectations are unrealistic - she's not expecting a world beater, just looking for the right horse for her. If it's not do-able for under £2k, I guess she'll have to up the budget. She's in no rush, anyway.

I love horse hunting with other people, fingers crossed & will report back!
