to get for £850 horse-wise? Or, more specifically, what would you expect a £850 5 year old cob to come with?

Would you expect a passport? Vaccinations? Broken/unbroken?
What can you get for £850 in the 5 year old cob region.

£850 for a nicely put together and well started cob is cheap. these animals hold their value and it depends who you are buying from. all horses must have a passport.
Vaccs, if any, will be on the passport.
Check its age ( and check the passport is actually for the horse you're buying,) check the state of its feet and whether it looks wormy or not.
Very likely, it'll be as green as grass and not riding fit.

If its come from the sales, pre-loved or a cheap end dealer, then buyer beware.

There are bargains to be had but mostly a quality 5 yr old cob would cost quite a lot more. If you are experienced or have an expert to guide you, you'll be better equiped to make a sound judgement or walk away.

I paid circa that for

- passported
- unhandled
- 3yo
- good bloodlines - cross and I met sire
- mare

She is a little stunner and despite being unhandled came straight over when the others hooned off. I knew in that second that she was mine and I didn't haggle on price at all, she's worth every penny of it.

I'd say it comes down entirely to what the horse is worth to you. I'd expect to pay more for young and backed. I've been to see older backed who could do everything for less though.

5 year old cob?

Bugger all. I'd expect unbroken, lightly handled and passported or behavioural issues tbh. Anything decent is worth that or more with nothing done.

If backed I'd be looking at why so cheap. Most backed are in the 2+k at minimum around here and rare that low.

Basics

Just backed/ sat on....
Maybe with passport or not
Raw/ green

At some of the sales like Bromsgrove this would get you a 'head collar' ( no passport) and a cob , nice but green with a few friends and harder to handle for about £700
