just turned 4yo Apaloosa X AAxmorgan. around 15.4hh,

At the moment she is on

1 1/2 sc of spillers high fibre
1sc mollassed chaff
1sc mix, i think its a cool mix
1sp feed balancer supplement
Ad lib hay

Shes in a field with no grazing and does nothing.

I will be upping her exersize to lunging/ longreining every day starting at 10-15 mins a day.
she will also have some grazing with me.

Would you make any changes just yet?

15.4 - is that like 16hh? ;) :D

I'd leave it and see how much the exercise affects her at first. Personally I like feeding for work done instead of work I'm about to do.

Durr, it was meant to be a 3.... but that number has changed like four times depending on what time of day i ask her owner and obviously i cant get to her to weigh tape and measure her. shes in a 5'9'' rug if that helps...

If anything she is on the chubs side, but obviously has very little muscle.

Agreed - Dont feed in anticipation of work. My TB is in light-medium work and isn't fed at all atm :eek::p
1.5 scoops of Highfibre cubes and 1 scoop of Mix sounds rather a lot for a 4 year old in not much work.. but if he's doing OK on it then I'd leave it exactly as it is. Up his work load, and if he starts to drop off then up his feed.

Well I wouldnt feed anything mollassed chaff. I would be inclined to give just good hay/grass and a feed balancer in a small amount of carrier feed (I use about a rounded table spoon each of soaked kwick beet and alfa lite chaff) and give mix if she needed it when work commenced

I thought it was quite alot as well, i was planning to just stick to single scoops of the cool mix and cubes... have a sneaky suspicion its 2 scoops of chaff as she did say usually she gives her a bit more usually. but as she'll have grass here and her hay in a net in the feild rather than lobbed on the floor.

Sorry its my final week of prep before she gets here and i want to be certainly certain.

The other thing is she is fed one meal at midday wheras i want it in halves morning and late afternoon evening.

Oops forgot to say she'll be living out with me.

Thats a HELL of a lot of food to feed in one meal

To be honest, if your new horse will be having access to decent grass I'd be inclined to feed adlib hay if/when it comes in over night and stick to a basic feed of high fibre cubes and chaff. You may find if you have enough grass that you dont even need to feed this, currently.

That does sound like a lot of hard food for something in no work atm! Especially adding the Sugar Beet?! Is she having trouble keeping weight on?

I would play it by ear, but if she's only going to be doing a little bit of work, then she shouldn't really need that much, however, like others have said, leave her with it and see how she goes.

Changing to feeding morning and night will be fine :)

(sorry for spelling) typed too fast! Doh!

lol. i know. They get it in a huge bowl!!!

I kind of sideways looked at oh and pulled a face as she was adding scoops of salt-epsom salt-selenium-garlic-balancer-vitamin e- etc etc and thinking, she wont be getting all that with me!

My plan was to cut out the sugar beet and have her on 1/2 scoop coolmix, 1/2 scoop cubes, 1/2 scoop chaff morning and evening and hay in haynets tied in various places in the paddock. for the first couple of days i dont doubt she will be that obsessed with the grass that she wont be interested in anything else.

I also have chance to graze her on a common with knee high grasses, which i will probably do inhand to get her used to traffic more as well.
