what would you feed?

I agree

You should be looking at a fibre only diet....
a good doer living out 24/7 will be a risk of laminitis and 3 times a week is not hard work...

I feed my 15h good doer happy hoof wether lamanitic or not... keeps her weight down, and her belly full while giving her all vitamins and etc she needs...but crucially has no calories...

in fact anything that has the laminits trust stamp on it will do.

hi fi lite plus the balancer is the same thing but why buy 2 products when 1 will suffice.

Nothing but grass

I strongly disagree a good doer will eat is's way to laminitis at this time of year.

I know been there this year and got the T shirt. just got my poor mare sound again, definately won't be making the same mistake again.

Not if it is on limited grass, which anyone with a lami prone/good doer would/should limit anyway.... I wasnt suggesting chucking it in a field of grass up to its knees and letting it get on with it.

Hi

I realise that but short/limited grass can spometimes mean they don't get the vitimins they need also it may not be sufficent to ensure good gut movement.

I do put my good doer in a starvation paddock, ie it has really short grass in it,.. but to be on the safe side as far as keeping her gut activeso as to avoid colic i feed a fibre only feed.... I guess everyone one has a different opinion on that but it makes me sleep better at night knowing she has limited grass and I feel better for doing all I can to ensure she does not get colic as a result.

My lad is hacked 6 days a week and he is on restricted grazing and 18 month old hay. I give him a couple of handfuls of hifi lite to put a general all round vit/min supplement into and that is his lot. I have done 15 mile rides on him from this diet and I still have to watch his waistline!

In terms of bucket feed, he really shouldn't need anything, but if you want to be sure he is getting all his vit/mins then you could feed a broad spectrum vit/min supplement (like Equivite or Benevit) in a handful of chaff.

ditto TGM, thats what I give, but as not much grass in paddock she gets 24hr soaked hay to keep her gut moving

thx. i'll go with happy hoof. i like to give him a small handful with his supplements in - biotin and magnesium. and a few carrots, apples as a treat. the grazing is restricted at this time of year, so much so, they sometimes get hungry and hang about at the gate waiting for tea time!.
