Beginning of week my girl had a squishy lump about the size of a 10p coin appear on the outside of her leg just above the knee. I kept an eye on it and it didn't change. Yesterday the knee is fat and swollen. Not massivly swollen but still swollen all the same. She is always slighty lame (she's an OAP!) but no worse than normal. Happy for me to prod an poke it. There is a little heat but not much. There is no obvious sign of having had a kick or anything. Have cold it yesterday a few times and again this morning. Would you guys continue to cold hose and see how it is later or would you call the vet out now?

If it were me..... I would make sure she wasnt any more lame than usual and that there was no heat..... and wait and see

If she is an OAP then there is a bigger margin for long term effects of leaving an injury or whatever it is alone.

I would call the vet if anything changed or if it didnt go down in a few days.... but would probably talk to the vet just incase it sounded sinister to them..... My vet doesnt insist on coming out at the drop of a hat

Does the lump feel as though it's attached to anything or is it a floaty lump?

It started as a squishy lump which could have almost been discribed as large fly bite type lump. But feeling it this morning it has harden up a little and isn't so squishy

It sounds as if it is a fly bite or sting that has just followed the easy way draining down. I go like this if I'm stung, it stays up for a while and then disappears in its own time no matter what I put on it.

Sorry, meant to add if she's not in pain or lame, I'd leave it a while but would just keep checking that it's not coming to a head somewhere. From past experience, if she normally wears a headcollar in the field, I'd take it off as she'll probably rub her knee with her head and could rub her cheek raw against the headcollar!

If you're at all unhappy then have a word with your vet.

Be careful cold hosing if it is an injury of some sort. Vigorous cold hosing can delay healing. New skin cells that will be trying to grow to repair wound sites can be washed away over and over again, and the cold that works so well to stop scarring when dealing with eg tendon injuries can prevent the white blood cells being brough to an injury site to tackle invaders.

There is no injury - just a fat knee! I wish there was an injury at least then it'd give me a reason for her having a fat knee
