What would you like to see in the Horse and Hound mag?

Just out of interest really, there seem to be alot of people on the stickied thread re lateness of H&H mag saying they are thinking of cancelling their subscriptions as the mag isn't what it used to be.

What would you like to see in it to make it a 'good read'?
 
I've only bought it a few times and not really that old enough to know what it was like previously. I just find that with all these horse magazines, it doesn't feel like value for money and they all seem to be crammed with adverts.

I feel that my needs are met on the forum, i.e. I want to know more about something then I will post a question rather than wait for the topic to be printed.
 
I like the veterinary pages, think maybe "discipline" related vet clinic articles etc.

Articles on therapies used on sports horses.

Week in the life of...... SJ groom, dressage grroms, kennel workers that kind of thing, but not namby pamby horse kissy stuff. Down to the grit of hard work and tears and joy etc.

Would like to see it getting involved and helping readers get involved with "delicate" issues like live horse transport, horse culls etc.

Research papers on injuries and lameness.

Will probably think of some more........:)
 
Continued results from the various disciplines. Veterinary articles that aim slightly above the total novice owner. Continued support for hunting (in all legal forms). Show date specials. Something useful about updates to legislation regarding transport and vehicles. Fearless reporting of welfare issues and court results.....

As previous posters would like to see it pop through door on a thurs, still waiting for this weeks copy. Don't want to see it turn into a weekly version of the monthly mags, I want to know that weeks news, results and reports it's what makes H&H different from the monthlys! Also want to see that weeks big event featured on front page so for eg next week should feature a winner from Olympia
 
I stopped buying it a few years ago, I used to buy it every week to read on the train to work and back. It got to the stage that I was finishing it on the way to work as there wasn't much content of interest and so I stopped buying it other than the 3 show issues, which are great

As to what I'd like to see in it

- more information on new veterinary research
- more hard hitting reporting on what's happening and in the news in the horse world, not just who won a class at some show or other
- information on new innovations, new products, the trade in general. Why not interview Horsewear or Buccas or any big supplier to the horse world (not just the ones that advertise though!).
- in fact more articles of any kind, it just seems full of adverts
- international news section might be good too
- weather for the week ahead, we all want to know that!

Could go on but better go and muck out now!
 
Definitely the above, I would really like to see how big yards are run, and IN DEPTH veterinary pages, they seem very simplistic sometimes.

Oh, and to see it. That would be nice.

Agree with the above comments - it's content is somewhat lightweight and there are way too many adverts.

The above and a results/competition summary that doen't turn into a lifestyle report on the rich and famous. I want reportage and fewer adverts.
 
I dunno what it is but I find some of the competition reports in H&H a bit, how shall I say, pedestrian, and not easy to read or digest. Put simply they are often boring, but then in mitigation I don't compete in any equestrian discipline other than a passing interest in TREC and Endurance, which doesn't usually have much coverage.

Yes, way too many adverts, agree.

I do enjoy the hunting reports and the days out the hunting reporter has with packs in various parts of the country - that's always interesting to read, and defo something you'd expect in, er, a Horse and Hound magazine.

Suggestion: what about a regular piece on say, a "day in the life" of a hunt employee? Or feature a particular pack and their history, OR profile well respected hunt horses?
 
Some great idea above, but also

a) more gritty articles on the sports disciplines, such as proper discussions on what training methods are acceptable/unacceptable in professional yards, do some riders push the line, what %age of professionally trained horses get put down quite young due to tendon problems and in which sports and does this suggest some of the training methods we are all advised to use on our horse rather risky, etc, etc. Rather than the 'hello' style articles we get.

b) When they do rug articles, etc real information. Not just this is available in blue and green and is pretty, more that this is suitable for big bones horses, or really good quality outer so good for horses who trash their rugs, etc.

c) And while we are about it, why not articles on how to mend and keep things going - rather than chucking and buying new.

There were some great articles last year, but far too many that seemed to me the journalist creeping up to some rider or other and too scared to pose real questions?
 
The last page should be something like, a how to page - like how to make your own haynets etc.
Would be great especially since time's are hard!

Another Idea could be to have more room for lower levels of sports- specfically eventing. I know its hard to cover all BE events, but more reports (and bigger!!) on Intro to Novice - after all, this is where 80% (or something like that) people compete!

I like the current series, on how to move up a level, I think it is great! More like that would be brill :)

I like H&H - but more "down to earth" articles would be great - not dumbed down, but articles for the normal horse owner/rider :)


I don't mind adverts - after all, they pay for the magazine and help keep the price of the mag down.
