What would you offer?

What would you offer for a horse that has had an injury to the coronet which will result in a split hoof that is managed with shoeing and should eventually be able to return to work (9 months time) but need careful shoeing for the rest of its life? Horse is 15.3 TB 5 yrs old.

My mare had a crack grown down her foot, after she had a flint come up & hit her on the corrent band, eventually she had a huge triangle shaped hole, at the front of her foot that tapered up to a crack coming down from the corrnet bad, She had to have circle shoes on and have the gap filled with hoof putty, it took a lot longer than a year to sort out nearer 3 or 4! It was not a huge problem, but a pain in the bum, if you know what I mean! (she is now 33 & has great feet)

I guess it would depend on the horse as to what to offer but depending on what the problem is, I cant see it making a huge difference to price, I would how ever consider having the foot x rayed before I parted with any cash, just because I also have another horse who has had real problems with his feet & a life time of expensive supplements & corrective shoeing.

i had a horse that at a young age damaged his coronet band and was left with a crack (like grass or sand crack) needed careful farriering but he was never lame on it at all and apart from being there(superficial)(SP) i even showed him in hand with it as it was classed as aquired not conformational!! He was backed ,broken, competed at ele dressage, bsja, and evented at PN level>> he never had any problems with it at all!! Obv these are diff cases and i only give it as an example, IME my horse was fine, if you have any doubts about the damage inside the hoof and structual damage the only thing you could perhaps do to be more sure is get him/her xrayed!!! the price would reflect the fact that mayb you needed to xray!

I had a mare that had a crack like that in her left fore, it was managed with careful shoeing and she was fine. (apart from looking horrendous that is...

I'd say get a vet to check the extent of the damage and then decide...I'd probably offer in the region of £1200 depending on what the vet says
