What would you pay? Quirky schoolmaster (if there is such a thing?!)

Thoughts appreciated...

17hh, WB, 10 (about!) with stringhalt. V noticeable at walk but he works well on the flat. Doesn't seem to bother him.
Dressage schoolmaster. Previously trained up to Medium. Has lateral buttons etc and nice paces (setting the hock aside!).
Doesn't want to jump apparently.
Spooky here and there to extent won't hack alone and not sure about in company.
Trouble with mud fever this year (almost went to lymphangitis but manageable when kept in)

Might buy him from a friend (at a suitable price) to help bring me on then sell again and hopefully see most of my money back. I ride him quite regularly at the moment and he's quirky at times but classy and bringing me on well. They are planning on selling to buy one that jumps too.

I think he'll improve me before buying one to event.

Didn't want to throw money away. What would you pay?

Thanks

A difficult one to value, he is only trained to medium level which means he has limited value as a schoolmaster, does he have a correct change established? he may not even hack in company so will not suit a person that wants to get out of the school for a nice hack once in a while.
Has he a decent BD record so he could go out and be gaining good %s and do area festivals etc or be on teams for PC or RC.

I usually am generous with values but this time I would think anything more than £1500 would be too much if you want to resell and even then it may be hard to find a buyer wanting to just school on the flat.

Very limited. Personally I wouldn't buy him-too many issues. Agree with 1500 if his work is very nice and consitstant because the non hacking is useless for most people wanting a 'schoolmaster'

Poor horse. Sounds like he is a stop gap for you all! Might be better if he was in a longterm home perhaps. Sounds like he would make a great riding school horse in a decent school.

I wouldn't be overly worried about the stringhalt, or the mudrash (I have one similar and now have hardcore turnout for winter that solves all that), and not met much that wouldn't hack out that couldn't be overcome with some time and work, so he's not all that unappealing!

Thanks for that. I thought about £1500.
He's a nice horse and at our place with the other owners so no hardship for him to stay with me.
I am not particularly in to hacking and have childcare issues if leave the farm so not best placed to tackle that one. Think he'll go out in company ok so I could just look to establish that.
As for the changes - I don't know! I was just trying to establish a balanced canter to start off with (my issues not his)! Might experiment. I would imagine they're in there when I find the right buttons.
I have jumped him before (some time back) and think he has a nice powerful jump. He used to compete 1.10 I think in the last home. I have asked if I can jump him again - v small and simple to see if its in there. We're planning to have a try next weekend to see what he thinks. They say he's fine but throws in quirky stops at unlikely fences intimating he's anxious or in pain. He doesn't feel in pain in the flat at all if a bit stiff at the start at times. I would like to think that if he was ok with a gentle re-introduction to the jumping job he might be more sellable for a nicer long-term home (or I might even keep him). I have a feeling he may not be brave enough to do the xc I'd like. I won't make a decision until I see how he feels jumping. If he feels uncomfortable then I'll steer clear (poor lad).
