What would YOU pay?

What is a fair price for this horse:

Good
15.2hh 12yr old bay ISH gelding
Bombproof, excellent in traffic, etc.
Have taught people to ride on him, so sane and sensible
Fantastic hunter, minds his rider, not strong, brave and honest, jumps anything, very scopey
done pc/xc/sj/ode/hunter trials
acceptable basic flatwork, works in outline, but nothing beyond leg yield, rein back, turn on forehand


Bad
no points
apparently beginnings of arthritus in his off shoulder, believed to be from old injury


Need to know as may be selling soon, much appreciated x

Just a little question....how can a horse have arthritis of the shoulder....there is no joint there??? Arthritis of the humerus yes...shoulder, no.

Not a vet who said it , a back person, that he was stiff in that shoulder and possbly mild arthritus, i presume meant by the elbow?? had mctimony chiropracter out to him few times before and she never mentioned anything like that, im just saying thats what they believed anyway..

i was thinking €3000 which is £2000 inc tack and rugs, is this unreasonable to ask?

I would say £1500, £2000 with tack and if he is suitable for a novice or nervous rider.

Elbow makes sense and if you really are going to sell Id be inclined to see if its possible to get a vet diagnosis before you commit to selling at a lower price.

'Back people' are not allowed to make any sort of diagnosis, only a vet can do that.

I agree about getting a vet diagnosis before selling your horsie for a lower price. A 'physio' (wasn't human qualified) said Han had DJD and when I mentioned to the vets some month later they said this person had no right to suggest such a thing as you cannot diagnose DJD without xrays.

Same as JM - I'm afraid it would never pass a vetting so maybe £500 at the most. We sold our ageing pointer for that as he would not pass the vet yet was fine in every way.

think thats prob best plan of action, thanks spaniel, i would never part with him but for yard/sharer/money problems all becoming a bit much now im at college, very down in the dumps but important lesson learned: never own a horse unless you're loaded or have your own place

JF had terrible arthritis in his knee when I sold him as happy hack- he was sound but had lost a lot of flexion.

Because he was 'bombproof' and looked the part I had people lining up wanting him. In the end took lower price for best home and took £1700 for him.

Was totally honest re the arthritis too- xrays went with him and they had access to his vet records with me.

If we ignore the arthritis for now (no expert opinion to back it up !), then i'd say about £2k - £2.5k.

If it is just a crisis while you are at college, why not try to find a loan home, he sounds like he could be ideal for a riding school. It would have to be somewhere local enough for you to keep an eye on

Hi, I run a very good EC in the south and we could offer him a home if it helps you out. He would be ridden for BHS students training for stage 2 and 3 and our Uni team to practice on. PM me if you like , I can give you some more info.

The athritis would put me off, because yes he may have been great at XC, hunting etc. but chances are he wont be able to do nearly as much now with this.

I wouldnt pay more than £2000 Im afraid.
