As some of you may know, i have a pony up for sale currently, 4yr old coloured gelding. Someone who lives next to the field where i keep him has approached me, through an ad they found for him, asking if they paid for some of his upkeep, whether they could exercise him for me.

Being winter, without flood lights, i can't ride after work, so pony doesnt get ridden at all in the week, but this woman would be able to ride him tuesday and/or thursdays during the daylight hours.

Now, i have never seen the woman ride, but obviously would 'vet' her, if i'm to trust her with my 4yr old, without me there. I have met her, previous to this, so know of her.

As i have never been in a situation similar to this, i was wondering what people would pay for this? She approached me, offering to pay, so i am trying to think of a reasonable price to charge.

Also, i am lucky enough to have 3 saddles that fit him, so it would be easiest if she had one. Should i have a deposit for the saddle (worth approx £150 2nd hand, although in brand new condition), as well as a contract?

Many thanks in advance,

Deposit for saddle and contract sound good but honestly I wouldn't ask for payment, she's helping you out - you could always ask for something like she pays for hard feed, or part of shoeing etc instead of money.

Given it sounds as though she will be helping you out a bit too, how about suggesting she pays for half his shoeing costs or something?

Regarding the saddle, something in writing would probably be a good idea. Also check your insurance covers her for 3rd party liability, if it doesn't ask her to join bhs gold

Ahhh, good plan with the insurance, thanks for the heads up on that!

Just taken the shoes off of the pony, Friday just gone, so fingers crossed, he will be sold before he needs a trim again. Any feed for the horses is split between 6, so it is fairly difficult to distinguish what he eats, so, any ideas what kind of money wise for food?

Many thanks again,

Why the need for flood lights? I have a full-time job, which involves a 45 min commute - but I still get out to exercise (on the roads) most mornings - head out at 6.30am - lots of florescent gear!

Definetely insurance but would also recommend a contract. I'm a sharer and am always suprised that people trust me with so much with out a contract/deposit - don't think I would be so trusting!

before work, with the J11 of the M4 needing crossing (its hell for those of you who don't know), i would NEVER get to the field, in time to tack up, take on a hack thats more than 2 mins, and get back in time to start work for 8.30.

Its about 40mins commute on a good day, an hour maybe on a really bad? Then i would need to go home, get ready for work etc., so this wouldn't really be an option here...

just to add, work is a further 20 mins from my house, in the oppoite direction to the horses, again, that if no traffic, taking bout 30-35 atm
