How well does he keep weight on and what work level is he doing?
We rarely feed 4 yr olds anything more than a few pony nuts and some hi-fi

I'm of the thought that youngsters need enough protein...so whats your grass like? The chances are its enough alone for the next few weeks atleast. Low sugar chaff (Hi Fi Lite) and horse and pony cubes or high fibre cubes tend to be good. Spillers make a H + P cube based on fibre energy and includes magnesium for calming which i've found pretty useful.

Going into winter my 6 year old is on chaff, high fibre cubes and cooked flaked barley (I wouldn't suggest the latter if the horse is fizzy...mine is reasonably but he keeps his weight well on it and is in enough work to justify it).

I feed my youngster - and have done since he was 3 - on hi fi lite and top spec feed balancer - it keeps him looking great all year round and if I want a bit more I will feed something like alfa a oil to give slow release energy.

I've always fed my youngsters dengie products, hifi and the alfa a pellets, soaked as recommended. In the winter added sugar beet as I am a great believer.

But, you cant go wrong with dengie products they are fantastic. Ralph is now 9 and my only horse at present and is on dengie hi fi light and baileys low cal, which again is fantastic, but a little expensive.

When I have a youngster - if he is a fine weight then I only feed a chaff, usually a high oil one and some speedi beet (along with usual vits & mins supplement). If he is underweight (or generally a bit of a poor doer type) then I feed a build up cube as well. Something like topline cubes etc. The one I have now is rather weedy (still growing!) so he is getting 2 scoops of nuts a day with his chaff.
