What would you say is a better mix?

Some of you may have seen my previous posts about breeding my mare in a few years time. This is her:

Now I have heard alot of good things about welsh x thoroughbreds and that seems to be a popular mix but what about welsh x arab? Been looking at stallions and seen one called Htobago who is simply stunning but dont know if he's too big (my mares 13.3) or if his owner would let him cover a native!

So generally in your opinion and from her photo do you reckon a thoroughbred sire or arab? (the intended use of the foal would be mainly leisure use lots of hacking and local competitions, I use my mare for jumping so would love a baby who likes it as much as she does)

Nice mare to start with.

Welsh x arabs are a great cross if you want to lighten up a bit, basically the same as thoroughbreds (considering tb's are really just arabs when you go back far enough) you will probably get more height using a tb though. It would depend what type of arab (or t for that matter) you used, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

As for Htobago, I think he is wonderful, just do a search on here or go to his website to have a look at him, he throws some fabulous typey youngstock, the purebreds are winning in the ring and I think (not sure) that his first crop may be under saddle now. I think he is about 15.2h, I believe he is only available by AI though, so the physical covering wouldn't be an issue, I wouldn't hesitate to use him for a mare the height of yours, 2h difference is my personal limit. I know that he has been used on a variety of mares, and a member here has TWO super red duns from him out of a lovely Highland mare. Easiest just to pm Htobago herself, she is a lovely lady.

I've seen a couple of welsh x arab ponies, think a couple of old ponies were welsh x arab mixes.. probably with something else as well but definitely had some strains in there. But all the ones I've seen are very nice & can lighten up a good welshie well. :D

In terms of arab or TB ... would imagine it will depend on how big a horse/pony you want at the end? TB will probably give you something bigger than an arab would, but both would make nice crosses.

14.2 would be my preferred height; wouldn't mind something 15 hands.

Gosh - thank you Enfys!

And thank you Tahazzamoose for your PM - to which I have replied.

Not much to add to Enfys's info and very kind comments, except that Tobago's oldest babies are only 3-year-olds this year, so not actually 'out' under saddle just yet - although some are being backed this year and should be showing under saddle in due course.

In principle, I would think that an Arab would be a good choice for this mare - Arab/Welsh is a classic, tried-and-tested cross, which seems to work very well, possibly because Welshies already have significant Arab influence?

Of course, TB/Welsh is also a very good and proven cross, but given that the mare is only 13.3, an Arab might perhaps be a better choice than a TB in this case?

Both tb or arab would be good crosses, don't rule out tb's on height a cob mare can take a bigger stallion if the stallion build is light, but even so on a 13.3 I wouldn't want to be going much more than 15hh ideally, there are some small tb stallions out there, just done a general search and this lad popped up and quite a stunning boy to look at:

but I've also heard alot of good words about Htobago too so he's definately one to consider!

I looked at him; i did think he was nice :)
however Htobago seems to be what we're more interested in at the moment :D
