If you went to view a horse and there was no one there to ride it first?
I will be there just don't want to ride him, not sure if i can bear to and It's just that i haven't ridden for nearly 2 years and i don't think that i would be the person to show him off to his best. But due to circumstances he is at a yard where i have never been before and don't know anyone there who could show him for me. Even when i was selling him before i never liked to show him to people as i'm a very nervous rider when riding in front of people, so the yard owner used to do it for me.
Anyway have a few people interested in him. i've dropped his price right down to £4000 now because things are getting really nasty between me and the girl that has him and i'm worried about the care he is now getting so i really want these people to see him at his best.
What would you think, and what would you do if you were me?

I'll be honest. If I went to see a horse that was £4k and there was no one there to ride him first, I think I would walk away, sorry.

Can the girl who has him not ride him? OR an instructor/trainer? I presume he is being sold in work?

i'd find someone to ride him. i wouldn't ride a horse i hadn't seen ridden first. and i wouldn't buy a horse i hadn't ridden. therefore... i wouldn't buy him.

i'd also be very suspicious of why you didn't want to ride him.

do you know anyone who could? i'd offer to pay someone if i were you. it will pay for itself when you sell him. x

I always prefer to see a horse ridden by someone else first - just seen too many barely backed horses in my time to want to play crash test dummy. If there was a genuine reason for not having someone to ride, I might accept it - ones that I will accept are broken limbs, or where the rider hasn't been there (at school) for what is clearly a childs pony. If the horse was clearly older than 3 or 4 (by teeth not owners say so) and appeared ok (not doped etc) I probably would ride, but chances are I would ask to see it lunged in tack before I got on. When you say you haven't ridden in 2 years, has he been ridden at all?

Again I'll be honest- I wouldn't even go and view. Sorry

The horse doesn't have to be amazingly showed off, but no way would I even think about getting on a horse that I hadn't seen ridden.

If i can't get anyone else to ride do you think it would better to see me ride badly than no one to ride at all?

absolutely. And it may work in your favour as the people watching will think THEY can do a better job.

Ditto what Mayflower says.
My instinct would tell me that you there was either something very wrong with him, which is why you won't ride, or that you are scared of him. Even if you told me different, I'd still be concerned and wouldn't bother going any further.

oh, definitely! no one is there to look at your riding! when i bought my horse they put this awful teenager on him, who whipped and kicked and flapped. i couldn't care less about her riding, all i wanted to see was how he moved when being ridden, and that he wasn't crazed and mental.

good luck!

Yes he is being ridden as far as i know. A girl took him and i gave her a year to pay as she didn't hav the money at the time and it turned out she was just taking me as a mug. So he is still with her until i can sell him so yes i think he is being ridden. The only problem if he wasn't would be his fitness as never had a problem when he has gone without being ridden before he never gets fizzy or mental. He is incredibly well behaved. Honestly the only reason i don't want to ride is cos i think i look like an idiot.

No not me in my siggy, wouldn't even want a piccy of me on him to be shown in public! Oh well if that's what you all think i'll just have to look like a complete imbecile! Wish me luck.

I'm sure you'll be fine! Its like riding a bike

If you dont mind me asking, how comes your selling. Ignore me if you dont want to answer

No way in hell would I get on a horse without seeing it ridden first, especially one the size of yours!

You'd be much better off riding him yourself, even if you don't manage to show him off particularly well, it doesn't matter

Totally! I just want to see that they are safe from someone else, and see the horses movement. Don't care if they can't ride for toffee, doubly so if they aren't the regular rider!

Also, is there any way you can have a pop on him maybe a few times before you know someones coming to see him? Just get used to the feel of him etc again x

no way would i wanna know onless i seen someone eles on him. Long drop you know....lol and 2nd i would not ride him before people come to see him . i like to see a horse sweat free and fresh from field. or i will think hang on a min you needed to lung him to make him less of a pain for the buyer. like i did with my mare she was fresh from the field. or stabble.

I would never get on a horse I didn't know unless I'd seen it ridden first. I know someone who went to view a horse and the seller said that she couldn't show it ridden herself because she had a back back, my friend decided to ride it anyway and the horse bolted, threw my friend who broke her leg.

It's not about your riding, it's about showing the horse is rideable.

I would no longer ride a horse for sale without seeing it being ridden first. Quite honestly, if I went to view a horse and owner said she'd not ridden for two years but got on and showed him in walk, trot and canter then I'd gladly get on. What's more it wouldn't worry me how you rode him, I just want to know he's safe before I get on

Pity you are in Surrey cos he looks lovely although too far away from me.
Good luck
