What would you use with this bit for better steering?

Which do you take out first?

Or do you suggest a better bit? Its for Mac 17.2hh, he can be strong but I can cope with that its the high head carriage and little bit of lack of steering I need to control!! Thanks

No he has always jumped with a high head carriage - which is fine but just need a bit more steering when I 1st put him in this he was fine but its almost as if he has got used to it.

Do you think roundings will make a difference?

I am going to jump him with the leather curb tom at JAS as I think this will help steady the bit and help with steering

Ah actually that could do the trick couldn't it. What noseband do you use??

Thats what I thought!

Just a plain noseband with flash.

Do you think maybe a grackle could help too?

Don't know. I'm sure you're far more expert than me on this - maybe see how you get on with the leather curb, and go from there??

this bit works well and you could use a flash strap with it

steering needs cheeks on the bit and this bit has that - don't see much else you could do - cheeked waterford ?

I would not be inclined to use that bit. For interest have you tried some blunt spurs to re-enforce the leg aids for help with steering. Quite often forward going horses are given stronger bits for control, when you can often acheive this by leg and seat. By riding stronger with your other aids, takes the focus off the mouth and gets the horse listening.

The tom thumb really isnt a severe bit because of the dimensions of the cheeks, i put it next to my loose ring snaffle and the arms are only marginly longer than the snaffle rings diameter. Just has a different action.

Nope, can ride with a single rein, probably incorrectly, but because of the length of the cheeks, the action isnt that huge anyway, sinilar to a american gag but softer.

its not that severe, i jump flint in his and it offers me alot more steering and more control and what he's doing, i also ride him in a grackle bridle (it balances flint out alittle)
