My bit is about 1/8 inch too big and so can't go down a full 1/4 otherwise it would be too tight. So I used biscuits - bad move. Now my lad has a bad rub on the corner of his mouth. What would you use to help it heal? Savlon or ....? Advice please!

their mouth tends to heal pretty quick, I would just put a dab of vaseline on it to help keep it moisturised and stop it from cracking.

Ron can pull like a train and the corners of his mouth kind of go like they've had sunburn (all flaky) and that seems to sort them!

Depending on how bad it is, I'd either use vaseline or sudocrem for if it's more like a 'graze', but if it's actually cut his mouth I'd swear by Camrosa ointment - had a horse with a very sore mouth when I got him and 6 weeks of camrosa and riding in a hackamore and he was sorted (and it helps make the moutha little tougher as well and less likely for the injury to happen again.

Out of interest, what type of bit are you using, and how strong is your horse? If he's getting rubbed, might be worth looking at how much pulling you're doing on the reins (please don't take offence, I'm just trying to think of possible causes and don't want to imply you're heavy handed!!) - if you find you're fighting him, maybe worth changing to a different type of bit where you can be lighter in the hand....

I use a nathe for flat work and a stronger bit for jumping etc. I was using the nathe. The rub (which is bad) isn't actually where the bit is but is more to the side of the corner. I'm probably not expalining it very well but if I think of my face the rub would be about 1/2 inch to the side of the corner of my lips! Does that make sense?! So it looks as if the biscuit has rubbed rather than the bit but maybe the end of the nathe is causing the problem?

By the way, is camrosa something you buy at the chemist?

that's almost exactly where Ron gets rubbed.. he's got quite thick lips (he's IDx) and its kind of where the lip turns back into his cheek. (does that make any sense?) It does seem to be the ring on certain bits that rub him (the bradoon on the double is most likely to do it, but the myler snaffle doesn't!)

Mine's an IDX too! And he's also got quite thick fleshy lips. I feel terrible that he's got this rub as it looks saw and raw.
