Well my horse has been having a few health issues of late concerning his guts. From what we can gather it seems to be something that he is eating that is causing the chronic inflammation in his guts. We stabilized him on steroids (only thing that works) but when we reduce the quantity down all the symptoms come back. So he on a high dose at present until the vet says we can reduce them. During this time of the not knowing he had a bout of colic which was caused by the codeine that was given to help dry up excess water in his poo.

The last few days he has been tender to touch around his stomach and a little off his food. He also not been happy to go outside to the field. So I phoned my vet for a chat and was advised to keep a close eye on him and keep him walking under saddle to see if he changes. He has been fine but was a little lethargic yesterday.

Took him in this morning to give him his meds and take him out for a walk. And he was so lethargic it was unreal. Totally not like my boy at all. He looks so sad in his eyes and hasnt eaten much all day. Not so tender around his stomach but right off colour. I left him inside and he lay down all day. Contacted my vet who said to monitor him closely to see if he poops and urinates and take his temp regularly. His temp has been 37 degrees all day and he picked at food but not much. Got to monitor him all night incase he goes downhill and vet will come out if he fine will be out tomorrow.

Anyone got any ideas what is causing my boy to be ill. I'm thinking about asking the vet about allergy testing and the possibility of having him operated on to see the exact location of the inflammation etc. If it was your horse what would you do? My head seems to be in a right mess so any ideas is appreciated,

And well done if you have managed to get this far. x

No advice, but interesting to hear responses as my poor boy has had recurrent low grade colic over last 2 wks, vets are stumped as to what it is...
fingers crossed for you that he's better soon!
