I am sorry if this turns into a depressing post! I have fallen off quite a few times but never seriously injured myself or broken any bones etc. I have had concussion a few times from landing on my head (fortunately I was wearing a hat). By far my most dramatic fall though happened whilst walking around in a school, it was a very hot day and I guess my horse just didn't have the energy to put one foot in front of the other so he collapsed, fell over sideways, rolling over the top of me! And so knocking me unconcious, I was only out for a few seconds but when I came round my vision had gone and I was very out of it! I had to go to hospital with quite bad concussion but other than that I was uninjured. I think I am very lucky to have never had anything major happen to me in my 14 years of riding. So just wondering what you guys have done!

My horse took a jump about three strides out and hit it, throwing me forwards....and I managed to hit myself between the eyes with the end of my whip knocking myself out

!!

When I came round I was flat on the floor on my back and unable to move anything below my neck. I was very calm, but then I got awful shooting pains down my spine which was absolute agony.

A paramedic was called and I was told I had compressed the base of my spine! I have had to have lots of osteopath visits and still have problems today where I can't stand still for too long or I can feel the bottom of my back going!! I did it when I was 15, and I'm now 18.

i have fallen off from a standstill and broken my arm and needed plates and screws put in!!

Have also come out the side door (off side) but Near side foot got stuck in stirrup so left me flapping off the side hitting my head (wearing a hat) on a tree as Hors galloped past it!!! Leaving me uncontious while hanging of the side!!

Yet im still riding... lol

Broke my nose falling off Amy out hunting - Poor Amy got stuck on the style and had to be lifted off by half the hunt.

We both lived to fight another day......

had a horse rear up and throw itself over backwards on me...

fractured pelvis, dislocated hip, cracked femur head, broken femur in 2 places, displaced patela, hairline crack fibia, hairline crack tibia and my right ankle was pushed 5 inches up into and behind my tib/fib...had bones in ankle removed and replaced with 4 screws and 2 plates......

9 months in hospital...and 18 months rehab...

and yes, i still ride...

Had a few good falls, but not broken anything yet - touch wood!!!!
Had two rotational's, both when I was much younger- one when I was about 11 out hunting, forgot I was on a 14.1 pony and tried to follow the Jockeys I was out with over a stupidly huge hedge, it didnt happen, she sort of got her front end over then did a hand stand and lay down - I just ended up under her neck and all was fine - although the Lads where dreading taking me back to mum and Helen

!!
Then when I was 13, I had one over a really small fence jumping a horse for some one - it managed to get the pole between its front legs and flip up - that did leave me with concussion, I still do not remember it now !
But the fall that hurt the most was when I was 15, it left me bloody sore and walking like I was 90, it was off a 15.2 cob I had backed, she had been a babe to do, I was going down the drive for about our 3rd hack, when she truly set about me, buried me then promptly jumped all over me, then stood and looked at me

So really I am due a good crashing fall - lets hope its at home not out and about

someone riding towards me hit me shoulder to shoulder. fractured humerus, dislocated shoulder. elbow rotated under ribcage with the impact and punctured my lung and ruptured my spleen. at the hospital nobody took my blood pressure so my internal bleeding wasn't noticed until it was almost too late...
it pays to have a very determined Mother fighting your corner against the n.h.s. i wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for mine...
horse was unhurt, btw. other rider unhurt too.

until friday the worst i had given myself is a few bruises and concussion (whilst doing a load of dangerous things like hunting and cross country)
on friday i was just getting on in the school, horse put in a buck just as i was putting my leg over her back, i landed flat on my back, fracturing chipping and compressing my spine, luckily im still able to walk but it hurts like merry hell

Broke little toe when leading a riding school pony when 14..... then nothing till 3 years ago when I fell off merlin and tore some ligaments in my hip

I seem to have come off rather lighter then some others

Ooh dear well compared to some (esp Lucyfer's!) mine is tame and I feel lucky that in 26 or so years riding my worst injury was a broken collarbone a couple of years ago from my horse slipping and falling on the road on me (well I was thrown clear).

My worst actual falls for me confidence wise was once where pony galloped full pelt to a water fence xc but ran through as if it was a puddle so cue pony disappearing and me flying head first onto the other side! 2nd was when horse took out a stride in a double SJ (v out of character) couldn't make the distance, crashed through it and I went over his head - turned round to see him with blood pouring from his mouth - he'd bitten his tongue! Don't think I've ever seen so much blood.

I have to say I worry much more about my horse being injured than me!! I generally seem to bounce a bit more (although now I'm older I am not quite as sure about the bouncing ability!!)

makes my current sprained ankle look pathetic then, and that is the first time since I was about 11 that I remember hurting something

Errrm well fallen off plenty but I really don't want to jinx myself thank you so I shall keep my lips firmly sealed.

When I was younger, 11 yrs old, I was turning my ultra bombproof pony out and she shot off taking me with her by my finger. It somehow got caught in the buckle (it was them awful buckles that you see on side reins). When I eventually came free from the horse, blood was pouring down my arm, luckily a lady off the farm took me home and my mum took me to hospital in her underskirt!!! she must have been getting changed, I turned up and she just forgot

What a sight we must have been. Was in hospital a week, had op and a pin in it with a cork on the top. ET was out at the time too, I looked just like him! Finger looks a bit odd now.

My worst was when I got hit by a car whilst out on a hack when I was 16... I was lucky and came off with only a few stratches where i'd hit the road. Unfortunately my boy wasn't. Both of his back legs were wiped clean off his body and he had to be shot at the scene. He was only 5

He was a big 16.2hh ISH and if he'd been any smaller I might not have been so lucky.

hmmm I started to think about all my falls and decided not to dwell too deeply so will just give one highlight. Was mounting pony out on a hack, having got off to open gate for others, ignorant b******** then rode off before I was on and pony bolted after them as I was on route to saddle. I fell under him and he stood full weight on my groin. Needless to say I was in shock and couldn't actually walk. Other f********* eventually noticed I wasn't there and came back to find me flat out and pony grazing innocently by the side of me. One ambulance, a lot of pain killers and approximately 25yrs later I can still see a vague hoof shaped dent in my upper thigh!

When I was little, probably about 8 years old my pony who I had dismounted to open a difficult gate kicked my cousin on his head (he had got off his pony to help me) he was in a very serious condition for a long time after being unconcious for several days.
He recovered but it was touch and go for what seemed to me a very long time.
It taught me a lesson I shall never forget....never, ever tollerate kickers, and I don't.

I've had two nasty ones. When I was 10 I fell off on a hack when I my pony dropped his shoulder in canter and the horse behind clipped my head with it's foot and trod on my knee. I was knocked out, broke my leg and put my tooth right through my lip!

When I was 16 I went to a local jumping evening. My horse was a bit tempremental and would put in dirty run outs. He was going really nicely and I stupidly started to relax a bit. He ran out at the second to last fence and I fell off onto the jump. I sprained my ankle, knocked myself out, broke my thumb, wrecked my back and fractured my hip! It ended with me having to sell him because I couldn't ride for 6 months and wouldn't have wanted to have gotten back onto him after a six month break and shattered confidence.

Whilst turning out Mulberry he reared up and pulled away from me,catching my finger in the rope.
I first had an operation to repair a torn tendon, then a second operation because they missed a dislocation, with a ligament trapped in the joint.
None of this has worked on my finger and im left with nerve damage.A bent and painful finger, which i cant use.
On thursday im going in to hospital again to have it removed.

Broken collar bone twice - evened it out so lumps on both sides! Fell off at 17 when jumping a friends 17.2 mental youngster, popped the jump then put in a massive buck, I went flying and landed on my back winding myself - being an idiot I got back on and repeated the whole accident all over again but this time ended up with back pain and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance on a spinal board. I was lucky in that it turned out to be 2 herniated discs, which less fortunately still bother me 18 years later.
I've also fractured both thumbs and pinkie fingers!

My 2 worst falls:

Well not a fall
On the cob, was out of a hack and jumped a log in the woods, horse then proceeded to piss off with me flat out gallop and smack, hit my face square on this:
Image170.jpg

luckily.... I had borrowed a friends hat which was a) too big
b) she had chewed th fastener so it flew off as I hit my head. I remember thinking "Oh my god... my head has fallen off" galloping around myhead flopped back until the horse ground to a halt and my head flopped forwards and I realised what had happened. 2 black eyes later and I lived to tell the tale.

2nd fall on same horse
mad.gif
we were on a hack and horse had a massive bramle stuck in his tail so I got off untangled it jumped back on and was just putting my feet back in my stirrups when he pissed off round the corner and through a very narrow gateway both stirrups got ripped off my saddle
crazy.gif
(how did I not rip my legs off?!) and galloped down a steep hill, i could feel myslef going off the side and tumbled off unfortunately turning the big fat cob onto myself, e stood on my thigh and my elbow I let go and he galloped off down the hill... turned around galloped back up, due to adrenalin I had staggered back up and was hobbling around screaming for my friend to help. He ran back through the gap, crossed an incredibly busy main road saw m friends pony back the other side and recrossed it whereby I limped up the hill absolutely hysterical and we rode home...

Bad head injury and cracked elbow got double barrelled.Since i tend to have forgetten alot of things.

Injured discs in my back got foot stuck and dragged over a jump.

definitley when i was hunting, must have been 3 years ago, i was galloping across a field, flat out on my 13.2hh pony, everyone was charging along and then suddenly i went flying. my pony had put his foot in a hole, he flipped over to the right i double flipped and skidded landing on my back. my pony didnt get up and i lay there in the middle of a field screaming as i was in so much pain, i thought i had broken my back. everyone stopped galloping and was in a circle round me. even the huntsman stopped! i think that was the only time in my life that i have seen my dad properly concerned for me :/ anyway, pony managed to get up, i was terrified he had broken his leg and i had bbroken my back. he got up, had cut his eye, was very swollen and had grass and mud on the top of his head between his ears- bless him. anyway, someone said to call for an air ambulance, at this point i shut up and attempted to get up- no way was i wasting their time! so i got up, with a lot of help, and got back on, not until i got back to the lorry did i irealise what i looked like, i had split my lip again... grass cuts all over my face and arms.... i then found out i had cracked something in my backbone :S that was 2 years later that i found that out!
but it was soooo painful... ill never forget the pain that i was in
