as above!!! am thinking that mayb if i purchased a lorry i might be able to cut the day to day fuel costs of my 4x4 (gas guzzler) is this a false economy??

if a lorry what should i look for and what should i avoid (eg ford iveco)??

What would be a reasonable price to pay for a lorry able to take a 17'2 with potential for me to put day living in or already in?? any age just reliable??

What you need to weigh up is the maintenance costs with a lorry. You obviously need plating, service and any repairs are much more expensive then with a trailer. Also depending on what lorry you get depends on where you can go - the older lorries with high emissions will not be able to enter certain parts of London and the outskirts

yes very good point, and if i was unlucky and ended up with a money pit of a lorry, no transport and added expenditure!! oh i dont know what to do, my car currently costs me £70 pw in fuel which i cannot afford ne more!!

Personally I find it cheaper with a lorry - could not afford 4x4 as a second car and already use £50pw diesel in a Pug 306 - would be more than double that in a 4x4!

My lorry costs the same to tax as my car (£99 for 6 months or whatever it is now)
Insurance is £130 - I think
Running costs - does about 12mpg
Servicing costs - negligible as OH does it!
Repairs - has cost no more than £1k in the 14 years I've owned it - I know I've been very lucky

Mine is an old V reg Bedford TL860 with no PAS and a 4 speed box - apart from year before last has cost nothing to get through MOT (brake hose split at test centre that time - covered the poor test guy in Brkae Fluid!

)

Don't forget 4x4 tax is going up from Budget thingy - someone was saying yesterday that even cars that are thought to be gas guzzlers are in this - a 1.8 Astra was quoted at £400 per year!

If you can sve £20 worth of fuel week by commuting and running around in a 50mpg diesel hatchback car, that will give you the average £1000 a year to keep a lorry taxed, fully insured,, MOTd and serviced / wear and tear costs.
