My traditional cob last the hair on his hind cannons last week, it was coming off in clumps. But, no scabs, no wounds, no bleeding, no red skin, not painful at all, hair itself was fine and clean, hair underneath was already growing back. His feathers and front legs are mostly ok, but the feather/hair is coarse there compared to his cannons. He also has a small patch behind his right knee (skin is a bit pink, no hair loss).
I don't think it's mud fever, even though he's been in a muddy field, as it was snowing over the weekend before and the ground was hard, although it was bit muddy afterwards. He has had pig oil & sulphur applied, but no more than usual (every ten days/two weeks) and has had it applied for the last two years with no problems. Could be this, I suppose.
I don't think it's mites as there's been no stamping or general itchiness and it's only on his cannons & knee. But again, could be this.
The pony next to him has had lice but he doesn't have them in the usual places or anywhere else afaik.
The only other thing I can think of is we had an accident a month or so ago - I fell off hard & hurt myself, only started riding this weekend. He galloped flat out downhill, approx. 60 acres down a steep hill, had a sore back & left hamstring. He's been treated by the physio and is much better. I'm thinking it could be stress as he lost the hair in between his back legs, behind his sheath iykwim, twice before through stress after illness. But it was the same place twice before and in a different place now so I'm not sure. He may be a big lump but he's a sensitive soul underneath
He's now been treated for fungal infection/mites/lice and it seems fine with the hair growing back. I just wondered if anyone's horse has had this? I'll add pics asap
