Hello having recently reviewed my horses feeding I'm interested in what everyone is feed these days, do you prefer to get your horses energy from a mix or cubes, prefer a high energy fibre source such as Alfa a or both and what supplement do you use, I have a 16.2 warm blood mare 13 years old and quite laid back she is not the easiest to keep weight on she's in medium work a good 40 mins schooling 5 days a week currently working at medium , I always feeding ad lib excellent quality haylege and at present feed Alfa a oil 1 round scoop, with 1 scoop of microlized barley and 1 scoop carm and condition morning and evening with naf 5* joint supplement I'd love to hear your views on your feeding and any comments about my horses diet thanks

Mine is on Graze On, Topspec All-In-One, Topspec Turbo flakes and Sugarbeet with Suppleaze 4:10:10 joint supplement. He's working at Adv Med :) I always think if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I would lose the barley, and if you need condition and energy, add a high-protein, high-fat, but low starch feed like Copra. Both of mine are on good hay, with a very small feed of 1/2 Speedibeet, 1/2 Simple Systems Lucie Fibre Cubes, micronised linseed, and ForagePlus Winter Hoof Health balancer. The Speedibeet and Lucie Cubes could probably be replaced by something like Fibrebeet, which is basically the same thing (unmolassed sugarbeet + alfalfa). If the pony needs condition or energy, I add Coolstance Copra. I would do the same for the mare, but she's only competing at N, and is a little round, if anything! :)

1/2 scoop hi fi molasses free, 1mug micronised linseed, 1/4scoop (dry measure) molasses free sugar beet pellets soaked, salt, pro hoof supplement-work wise 5 days per week hacking/schooling/lunging worked for at least an hour each of the 5 days.

I have a very laid back show horse who is a fairly poor doer.

However I've finaly managed to get his diet right and we now have realy good bouncy energy and sparkle but still maintained his lovely calm nature. Oh and realy good conditionwithasuper shiney coat

for your horse as she is laid back the calm and condition wont be helping, the barley will be doing very little aswell. I would ditch both of them and feed something very very high oil.

My lad is on Coolstance copra meal (0.5 big round scoop dry but then soaked in 1.5 scoops of water) and 1/2 a round scoop baileys number 6 endurance mix. He gets this twice a day. The CoolStance is for weight and condition and the Endurance mix is for energy and sparkle.

He is in work 6 days a week, I normaly only do 30 to 45mins at one time but Lenny feels like he could go forever.

My poor doer WB is starting to get fat on Copra! He's on 1 stubbs scoop-ish of oats a day (soaked 24 hours and fed as a separate feed), 4 cups copra, 2 small cups linseed and a scoop of readigrass which I have just cut out as he doesn't really need it anymore.

Hiya, sorry to hi-hi - jack the thread. I also have a laid back mare and was thinking of trying Allen and page power and performance, or spillers instant energy mix?
She has a good diet, but needs more oomph and sparkle and is way too laid backk!
Anyone tried these?

You could simply up the Barley. Barley is an excellent, high energy source however it has a relatively low digestibility, hence why you need to feed quite a bit :)

I've found often fitness and keeping the work 'fresh' does wonders for their energy levels. I found doing 10 minutes round the block at a spanking walk, followed by a few short canter reps, before starting schooling, helped my young horse stay motivated and forward. Otherwise a short, energetic lunge helps him to think 'power' on his own, he will be noticeably more energetic and in front of the leg when I hop on.

He's fed twice a day, per feed: 1.5kgs Whole Oats, 1 kg Johnsons Alfalfa Plus (compressed Lucerne pellet) and .5kg Copra meal. Constant access to a round bale, and he gets a smidge of Lucerne hay after work at the moment because the paddocks are a dust bowl and there is no green pick at all. He's an excellent weight, and has the energy stores available to him, it's just a matter of encouraging him to use them! :D

You are defeating the point of calm and condition by adding barley- as its a barley free diet.
personally if you need more condition i would recommend linsed and or equi jewel rather than barley.
