What's special about irish horses?

mmmmm, Ty was my first horse after 15 years off riding - an Irish TB x....had his moments but they genuinely seem to be switched on, forward going but have a sensible head! Looking at possibly buying another one x

In all seriousness though ,they have abit of everything , when it comes to strength , stamina, looks and just generally quite level-headed majority of the times anyways

i think that because the irish horses take time to mature, they get a wider spectrum of work, (its hard to put this in words

) and are not pushed so hard so young, when compared to warmbloods anyho!

Both our girls are amazing little irish girls - have had one 18 years and the other 6 years - good looking, tough, sensible, good natured, able to find that fifth leg when needsbe, and just generally very nice horses!

I have 2 first is tbxid that allegedly came from ireland spooky as hell but we like her, 2nd one is irish cobx who is not scared of anything jumps loads and I would like another just like her
 
A lot, not all, but most of them just have that special attitude to life and they enjoy what they're doing whether it be bumbling along through the woods or having a raz across country. I love their sparkle and usually, their kind natures. They are usually too, as nimble as a cat whatever their build, unlike a lot of warmbloods who trip over their own nose unless you're hanging onto them for dear life!

Seriously though if you go back through the past 2 or 3 decades there wasn't an easy link to the continent, ISH were more accessible and plentiful, therefore more likely that 1 or 2 special ones would appear (the law of averages!). I also think that because the Irish horses are later to mature, they seem to last forever when they reach the top, that means that they stay in the public domain at the peak of there game and more people remember them.

Give me a nice Irish horse over an englih one anyday. Irish horses are nice charactres, bred for temprement, have normally had quite a good all round education, even if a bit roughly broken they have seen stuff and are never spoilt like horrid homebred english horses. Irish horses are exceptionally honest, willing and have the brain to get out of trouble, and are also bred to be sound.
 
I think the vet was right! (About breeding/shooting!)

I don't know about being brought on slowly. I thought breaking in consisted of slapping on a saddle at 3 and taking it hunting! The fact that they can cope with it proves why Irish horses are good.

I do think that Irish horses are expected to go out and do more things - they are not mollycoddled the way they are here. Most horse are taken hunting - that is less and less so in the UK, for various reasons.

I was over in Ireland once and looking at a Connemara pony out on the moors, running loose. The following week it was at Dublin winning its class (in hand).
 
PS - there was a report in H & H earlier - this season anyway - from a hunt in Ireland, when they were nearly all out on 3 year olds, jumping huge banks. I rest my case.

They just have something! They know how to get themselves out of trouble, particularly the hunters. I love Irish horses. They're tough, too.
