This is the 3rd foal I have bred. I sold my first one at 9 months as she had needed a hernia operation. The second foal I have kept and is now three. My current mare had a lovely colt foal 2 1/2 wks ago. He is by a reg Conny stallion out of an ISH hunter mare and was bred to become a pc eventer type. Not sure at what age new owners would want to buy a foal and if before weaning who would be responsible for his insurance/vac/passport ? Any advice much appreciated.

It really depends on your market, foals always look more appealing and yearlings do not and yearlings are still a few years from riding as well so their market tends to be liminted, so ASAP for the cute factor.

You must sell the animal with a passport, it is an offence not to, so that would be you as the sellers legal responsibility and unless you are quick you will also have to pay for a microchip to be inserted before applying. (The deadline is 1st July).

You could offer a buyer the opportunity to name the horse if you wish, you can apply for a passport without naming a horse. You will need the passport by 31st December or at 6 mths of age whichever is the later by law.

I vaccinate for tetanus but not flu, so if a buyer wants that they can pay for me to start the course, and I would advise a buyer to make their own insurance arrangements.

Hope that helps

I bought my yearling at 6 wks old. Deposit of 50% of purchase price was paid then on basis that if anything at all happened to foal then it would be refunded in full. If I changed my mind however, stud would retain it.

As I'd bought her early, I was able to name her. I didn't start jabs till I brought her home. Her passport was applied for in the name I'd chosen by the breeder and handed over to me when I completed the sale.

I didn't insure her whilst she was still at the stud.

Thanks for your replies. Will get the camera out again. As he'll be registered with the British Connemara Society as a part bred I presume he'll need microchipping anyway. My other horses are all chipped so don't have a problem paying for that. Had wondered about the registered name on the passport. As I don't have a registered prefix it sounds a better idea to register him unamed so the new owner can choose one.

If you don't name it, you might run the risk of being unable to follow its progress as it ages or competes if you're not told what it's to be. Although you could ask the buyer if they have any preferences you could put into the naming pot

She says tounge firmly in cheek, you should be able to track the foal and it's new name on the NED using the passport number shouldn't you?????????

Mind you my foals from last year are not on there yet !!!!!!!

Slightly off thread and not particularly knocking the NED but I don't have that much confidence in it at present. Must admit I though I did have to sit down when I checked and my two other homebreds were on there and all details were correct.
