what's the best colour for hi-viz

I've always used the traditional yellow with a tabard & hat band as a minimum but it got me thinking the other day when I was driving up the road from the farm and saw 2 horses, one in orange and the other in yellow - have to say I spotted the one in orange first especially as the road is lined with hedges that have started to yellow a bit.

... so what colour do you think stands out the best?

i think it depends on the time of year and where in the country you are - its pointless wearing yellow if the roads are lines with rapeseed planted fields

I have also heard that officially its orange but when you see just about every road worker in yellow you do wonder why if the best colour is orange why they arent wearing that!

The hi viz my dad had for working on the tube is orange *and* yellow - on the basis that it depends on the conditions.

kind of interesting isn't it that all of the major equine retailers sell pretty much only yellow ... or pink but I feel the pink is probably to capture a certain market rather than for safety reasons. Can't say I can think of a single place that sells orange

I'm certainly up for mixing and matching my colours based on what I noticed the other day and apparently my yellow does bugger all to slow down the rail replacement buses that believe that as the road has a 50 limit on it they should do just that past us

I once saw a programme that said pink elicits a caring response in people so perhaps boy racers could be moved to brake for pink!?

It's yellow for low light, pink for bright light and orange for either, so on that basis orange is the most versitile.

Orange. It's what I get given to wear at work as can be seen from furthers away. All staff that work or have to go on the railway track have to wear orange. Platform workers wear yellow as not as visible but they are not allowed on the actual tracks

I recently saw a cyclist with a vest in all four colours! (green, yellow, pink and orange) which was very visible. Unfortunately, he was going too fast to ask where he got it!! I suppose it would be worth looking in cycling specific shops?

I really want more orange Hi-Viz stuff for horses.
I go to see my local football team often and from where I sit, you always notice the stewards in orange where ever they are in the ground long before I see the Yellow Hi Viz-ed Stewards, so irrationally I think I'd feel more reassured in orange or at least a mix of the two.
I refuse to wear pink!

What a useful post for those that use it, ours, both human and horses have yellow, but I will be changing to orange, better safe than sorry.
Anyone know where to get the orange stuff from?

Try ebay, lots of orange for people stuff. Horse gear only seems to be yellow or pink.
