Talked to the vet today and, if all goes well, my old mare will see her 1st blade of grass for 10 weeks in around a weeks time. Problem is how to introduce her to grass slowly so she doesn't gorge herself and go back down with laminitis. Obviously I'll graze her in hand to begin with, but in mid November I can't imagine I'll stand in a field for more than an hour :D

Vet suggested a muzzle which I've never used before and I wondered if anyone could give me any recommedations?

I have to say there's a fairly strong chance the mare will stage a protest (eg she won't wear a fly mask - she just stands stock still til its removed. After 24 hours of immobility I caved in! But I think she's SO desperate for grass she might be ok in one....maybe...

This summer was the first one that my mare has needed a muzzle (due to my gelding going on loan she now has more grass.) I bought the Roma comfort grazing muzzle- which is a bucket muzzle. I was worried that my mare wouldn't eat but she is so greedy that she tucked in almost straight away. It has occasionally rubbed her cheeks but I have covered the side bits with wool covers. The Roma muzzle has worked well for me- she hasn't (yet) been able to get it off, it's as field safe as I could ask for and she's been very happy in it. A lot of people prefer the greenguard muzzle but personally I prefer the bucket muzzles- I just don't really like the idea of a grid like contraption connected to a headcollar (just me being odd I think )
