Okay so this is a really REALLY REALLY REALLY numpty question but i feel like i have to ask

What is the best way to learn about horses?

It sounds kinda stupid but is the only way these days to go to stable management/riding classes?
I'm talking more about knowing what they need to be fed, how to look after them etc rather than general knowledge like breeds and stuff
I find you dont learn much at RS anymore they just dont have the time for you

unless you specifically pay for classes in management etc and unless you've grown up with it whats the best way to learn?

Please excuse the numpty-ness

I had my own ponies up until about 17 but have been horsefree the last 5 years so currently a bit rusty!! I've been having riding lessons the last 6 months to get back into riding and have subscribed to HHO and bought numerous books and other magazines to brush up my knowledge!! Amazing what you can pick up

The RS where I work have kids who loan a pony there, they are all taught about management, so maybe try a different riding school.

Good on you for asking the question - it's all too easy to think you know more than you do...

I don't know your age but how about offering to help out at a reputable yard on an occasional basis, like a sort of working pupil but not as formal?

Or check out your local colleges and see if they offer any sort of courses?

good luck with it

Magazines are a great source if information covering all sorts of topics. If you need specific feed advice all the feed brands have a help/advice line which you can phone to get expert advice on feeding your horse for free (the advice not the feed!), this is really good as it would be specifically for your horse. Also don't be afraid to ask someone with more horsey knowledge than yourself, most people are more than happy to help. I've only just joined this forum, but everyone here is very helpful in offering advice and suggestions for different situations.
Good Luck.

Well done for asking....
As above, books, magazines, local RS & also livery yards...as everyone needs help with their horses in one way or another. I would love to have someone like you to accompany us to comps...as there are never enough hands !!!... so offering your services via tack shop ads etc would be a sure way to get involved. Good luck to you.

I helped someone with their horses FOC for about three years before getting my own, I could ride but had only had lessons at a riding school so knew very little about day to day care. I put ads in my local tack shop asking if anyone wanted help with their horses in exchange for riding. Learnt lots from her and her friends who I hacked out with and became really good friends.

Wow, great-nice to see so many responses

thanks guys! Im just a bit worried because i dont know very much at all and the people locally dont either have time to teach me to do it right, nor the patience or arent interested, and i get embarrassed. I dont want to do it if i dont know how cause its a huge responsibility. I think i might try and get involved at the riding society when i go to university and that might give more more options, im just owrried it will be cliquey and everyone will know a lot more
