as the title says really

is it just me or are the majority of horses stolen and we hear about in the news and that shetlands? if so why shetlands, why such a demand for them?

just a little bit curious and confused...anyone else noticed this or is it just me with rose tinted glasses again :o

Call me Mr Thick ,but why, who wants a shetland hide. I would have thought there were more than enough hides about ,legit.

i don't know o'm no expert. have you heard of pony fur coats? i think their a big thing with some people and shetties have thicker coats so i would have thought that was the attraction....:(

Maybe Shetlands arent being stolen ,but sneaking off to some secret island(probably with a volcano) and plotting world domination.:eek::eek:

They are also stolen as they are easy to hide and transport, even in the back of a large transit....and can be tethered to any odd small patch of ground.

This, and in fact for the smaller ones they can be squeezed into something smaller than a transit.

If you have a Shetland then, just like any other horse or pony, it should be freezemarked to prevent theft and assist recovery

I don't think it is anything to do with their coats!

Shetlands, along with coloureds of all sizes / breeds, are very popular with a certain section of the horse owning population who are happy to take what isn't theirs.

On top of their popularity with that section, they are easy to steal, as they can be lifted over fences & gates by a few strong men, will fit in the back of a van, and are much more easily hidden during & after theft.

As a breeder of shetland ponies, we recommend all our new owners to get their ponies freezemarked, if they aren't already done, and we have been working our way through our ponies, to make sure that they are all freezemarked.

When I was first involved with Horsewatch about 11 or 12 years ago, shetlands were being stolen to be taken to Europe. Their hides were used in the making of realistic rocking horses for children. That may or may not still be going on. The most targeted were coloureds with good markings.
